The short answer
Unresponsive touch controls, zones that will not set and panels that beep and do nothing are the visible half of this fault. Spillage and heat are the causes behind most of it. Appliances at this end of the market are generously made and electronically supervised, which means the cheap causes present exactly like the expensive ones. The line between owner work and qualified work is drawn clearly below, and it is worth respecting exactly.
What the appliance is doing
- The panel beeps continuously and shuts the zones off — A protective response to a spill or to a pan left on a control area.
- A lock indicator showing on the display — The simplest possible answer and a common one.
- The touch panel does not respond at all — A lock, a supply interruption, or a control that has been heat-affected.
- NEAR MISS: no display and no power at all — A supply fault rather than a control fault.
Ranked causes
- Moisture or residue on the control area — Most likely here. It leads on a cooktop of this class because the control area is part of the cooking surface, and anything on that surface is read as an input. Touch controls read a change in capacitance, and water, oil or a cloth on the glass reads exactly like a finger.
- Control lock or child lock engaged — Next most likely. Free to rule out, easy to engage by accident when wiping the surface, and a very common answer.
- Heat reaching the control assembly — Third in the order. A pan overhanging a control area, or a zone used at high heat for long periods, warms electronics that sit directly below the glass.
- Zone sensor out of range — Then this one. A control that cannot read a zone temperature will refuse to run it rather than guess.
- Body: Ranked for a Brigade cooktop specifically. The order is the value here; the list on its own would be the same list anyone could write.
The order of checks
- Wipe and dry the control area completely — Moisture and residue account for more of these faults than every component combined.
- Look for a lock indicator and clear it — It refuses everything and is cleared without a part.
- Check nothing is resting on or overhanging the controls — A pan handle or a cloth is read as a permanent touch.
- Body: The order below starts with the surface, because on a touch cooktop the surface is the control.
The checks you can do yourself
- Clean the glass with a dry cloth and try again — Do this first and do it thoroughly, including the area between zones.
Tools: cloth
- Move pans away from the control area and let the surface cool — Heat and overhang both cause refusals that clear on their own.
- Switch the circuit off for several minutes, then restore it — If the fault clears and returns, note what the cooktop was doing when it returned.
- STOP before lifting the glass or reaching the control board — That assembly is live and the glass is bonded to it.
Before you touch it
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel; a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. A cooktop surface stays hot long after the zones are switched off, and a cracked glass surface on a powered appliance should be isolated immediately and not used again.
When to call a technician
Call when the surface is clean and dry, no lock is engaged, the supply is proven and the controls still refuse. Call immediately if the glass is cracked, because a cracked surface over live electronics is a different and more urgent problem. Note whether the fault appears from cold or only once the appliance is hot.

The limits of this page
This page is written for the appliance class rather than for one Brigade family or model line. Where a family- or model-specific page exists for your unit it is the more specific answer and should be preferred over this one; the brand and appliance hub linked below routes to everything more specific that exists today.
