The short answer
On a Cafe CWE refrigerator, noise is a location question. The evaporator fan behind the freezer panel, the condenser fan at the floor and the cabinet itself account for nearly all of it, and the door switch separates the first from the rest. The matrix below names a small number of tags. They differ in trim and revision rather than in how this fault presents, so the order below holds across all of them.
What you can observe on these models
- A chirp, scrape or warble that stops when the freezer door opens — The door switch cuts the evaporator fan. A sound that dies with the door is that fan, its bushing, or its blade touching ice, and nothing else behaves that way.
- A drip, gurgle or hiss shortly after the cycle ends — That is refrigerant settling and defrost water reaching the drain pan. It is normal on every cabinet of this kind and is not a fault to chase.
- A buzz and a water sound on a schedule, several times a day — That is the ice maker filling and harvesting. It is only a fault when it happens with no ice to show for it, which is a different page.
- NEAR MISS — a loud hum with no cooling and no fan sound at all — That points at a start relay or a locked compressor rather than a noise fault, and it belongs on the not-cooling page.
Causes, most likely first on this family
- The evaporator fan blade touching frost, or a worn fan bushing — First: it is the moving part that lives in the ice. On these models the blade clears the shroud by very little, so a defrost cycle that is falling behind announces itself as noise before it ever announces itself as a warm cabinet.
- The condenser fan blade fouled by dust, a coil guard or debris — Second. It is audible from the front of the cabinet on this line, it runs only while the compressor runs, and clearing it is a vacuum-cleaner job rather than a repair.
- The ice maker filling, harvesting or dropping into an empty bin — Third. Several short bursts a day, each one a fill followed by a clatter, is the machine working. It only becomes a fault when the bin stays empty.
- A compressor bearing or internal wear — Last. It is real, it is expensive, and it is far rarer than the causes above it, which is exactly why they come first.
Check in this order, and why
- Open the freezer door and press the door switch in — With the switch held the evaporator fan runs with the door open; release it and the fan stops. A noise that follows the switch is inside the freezer compartment and the rest of the cabinet can be ignored.
- Rock the cabinet and check the feet — A cabinet that rocks is a cabinet that amplifies. Levelling it is free, takes a minute, and removes the one variable that makes every other noise sound worse than it is.
- Only then remove the rear freezer panel, with the power off — Do this last because it is the only step that needs tools and a thaw. What it shows — a blade path glazed with ice, or a dry blade that spins rough by hand — is decisive either way.
Before you open anything
Safety
Disconnect the power before reaching into either compartment; a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. A moving fan blade does not care which finger finds it, and the door switch exists so that you never have to test one by hand. Moving a full cabinet is a two-person job on any floor that is not flat, and the doors should stay shut while it moves.

When to call a technician
The owner side of this fault is location and levelling; the service side starts at the motor. If the sound has been traced into the freezer compartment and a thaw has not changed it, the fan motor or its mount is the remaining answer and the compartment has to come apart to reach it. A loud start with poor cooling, or any smell of burning from the machine compartment, is a stop-now call rather than a booking.
