The short answer
A Caf CQE ice maker fails in a pattern: water arrives or it does not, and the mould harvests or it does not. The matrix below carries a single model tag, so there is no revision fork to work around on this family: what holds for that tag holds for the line. Settling which half is broken takes one look into the mould and costs nothing, and it is the step the brand-generic article cannot put in the right order for a specific platform.
What you can observe on these models
- Ice production stopped after a filter change — An unseated cartridge or an aftermarket filter that does not match the head restricts flow immediately.
- The bail arm is in the raised position — On arm-equipped models this is the off switch, and it is knocked up by a shifted bin more often than anyone expects.
- Water pools under the bin and refreezes — Overfill or a misaligned fill tube. It ends as a sheet of ice under the bin and a jammed auger.
- NEAR MISS — no ice and no cooling either — If the freezer is not holding temperature, the ice maker is a symptom. Work the cooling page first; the ice returns when the cold does.
Causes, most likely first on this family
- Water supply restricted — shutoff, filter or line pressure — Ranked first because it accounts for most of the calls on these models and because every part of it is checkable without tools: the valve behind the unit, the cartridge date and the dispenser flow.
- Fill tube frozen or misaligned — Second because it is visible from the bin opening and is cleared with warm air rather than with parts.
- Freezer temperature too warm to trigger harvest — Third: the module waits for the mould to reach its release point, so a freezer sitting above the safe range makes cycles longer and eventually stops them.
- Water inlet valve solenoid or screen — Fourth, and a real part replacement rather than an adjustment, which is why it sits below the free checks.
- Ice maker module, thermostat or ejector — Last: the module is the part most often replaced and least often at fault. Reaching it before the water side is the classic wasted repair.
Check in this order, and why
- Empty the bin completely and look underneath — A sheet of ice under the bin jams the auger and stops delivery while production continues normally.
- Confirm water reaches the mould on a forced fill — Water arriving and then sitting unfrozen moves the whole fault to temperature rather than supply.
- Check the fill tube alignment — A tube nudged out of line overfills the mould edge and builds the plug that stops the next cycle.
- Compare cube size over a full day — Hollow cubes that stay hollow confirm restricted flow; normal cubes that stop confirm the harvest side.

Safety
Power off at the plug or the breaker before any panel comes off; a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Close the water shutoff before disturbing the supply line or the filter head, and have a towel ready — the line stays under pressure until it is bled. Never run the ice maker with a hand near the ejector.

When to call a technician
Call when the fault survives a filter change, a full bin clear-out and a fill-tube thaw, or when the freezer itself is not holding 0 °F (−18 °C). A warm freezer is a cooling repair and the ice maker is only the messenger. Anything that needs the valve replaced at the back of the cabinet, or the module harness unplugged, is a service call on these models.
