Seals fail by losing shape, not by tearing. A gasket that looks perfect can still be leaking along one edge where the door has dropped on its hinge, and that is where to look first. Every step below removes a whole class of fault rather than a single part. Most of it is settled before a tool comes out.
The observable signs
- A cabinet running far more than it used to — A continuous small leak shows up as run time long before it shows up as warmth.
- A gasket that is stiff, shiny or visibly flattened on one edge — Age and compression set rather than damage.
- Condensation or beads of water around the door frame — Warm air meeting cold surfaces where the seal is not closing.
- NEAR MISS: condensation inside on the shelves after heavy use — That is normal humidity from warm food and frequent opening, not a seal fault.
Most likely first
- Door sag or cabinet out of level — Most likely here. It leads on a licensed cooler because the cabinet is light and the door is glass, and the combination drops out of alignment easily. The commonest real cause. The door closes against the frame unevenly and the seal cannot make contact along its whole length.
- Gasket compression set from age — Next most likely. The rubber loses its spring and stops pushing back against the frame, usually along the hinge side first.
- Food residue or sugar in the gasket channel — Third in the order. Sticky residue holds the seal open a fraction and also tears it when the door is pulled hard.
- Torn or split gasket — Then this one. Obvious when present and much rarer than the causes above.

What to check first, and why that first
- Run the paper test at several points around the door — A sheet that pulls out freely marks the leak, and its position points straight at the cause.
- Check whether the cabinet is level and the door closes itself from part-open — A door that swings open again is sitting on a cabinet that leans forward.
- Empty the door shelves and repeat the paper test — If the result changes, the load was the fault.

What an owner can safely check
- Wash the gasket and its channel with warm water and a soft cloth — Sugar and grease residue hold seals open and shorten their life.

A refrigerator door is heavy enough to injure someone when a hinge is loosened, so do not take the weight of one alone, and never work on a cabinet that is standing unlevel on a hard floor.
The point at which to call someone
Call when the paper test fails after cleaning, levelling and unloading the door, when the gasket is split, or when frost keeps forming at one corner despite a good seal. A dropped hinge and a replacement gasket are both routine work, and both are cheaper than the run time a leaking door costs. Ask which of the causes above were ruled out, and how.
