The short answer
On a gas range most faults are ignition, port fouling or an oven igniter that has weakened. The classes below name them and point at the page that covers each. Identify the platform rather than the brand and the list of possibilities shortens immediately. The line between owner work and qualified work is drawn clearly below, and it is worth respecting exactly.
Symptoms and the page that covers each
- An oven that preheats slowly or never reaches temperature — A weakening oven igniter, the classic gradual gas-oven fault.
- Roaring, whistling or popping burners — Combustion noise. See the noise page.
- A yellow or lazy flame — Poor combustion from a fouled or misassembled burner.
- A smell of gas — Not a diagnostic class. Leave the building and call the gas utility from outside.
Ranked causes
- Ignition faults — The one to suspect first. On these shared platforms the ignition group leads, because the same electrode and module hardware appears under every badge in the group. Wet or fouled electrodes, misplaced caps and modules that click without lighting. The largest class on any gas range.
- Burner fouling and assembly — The second suspect. Spillage in the ports and caps refitted out of position, almost always after a cleaning.
- Flame supervision faults — Third, and less common. Burners that light and go out.
- Oven igniter decline — Fourth, and less common again. The gas-oven fault that develops over weeks: slow preheat, then no heat at all.
- Body: The classes below are ordered by how often they generate a complaint on a Brown, Royal Rose, Summit, Imperial and Brentwood gas range. No count or share is given for any of them, because no fact bundle in this page carries one; the order is a field ordering and should be read as such.
How the problem classes rank — Qualitative ordering only. No component-share dataset with a published denominator covers Brown, Royal Rose, Summit, Imperial and Brentwood gas ranges, so no share, count or percentage is stated here; the rank column is the field ordering used on this page and nothing more. — Ranked, not measured: the ordering below repeats the ranking above in table form and carries no numbers because no fact bundle supports any.
General guidance| Rank | Problem class | What it looks like from the kitchen |
|---|---|---|
| First | Ignition faults | Wet or fouled electrodes, misplaced caps and modules that click without lighting. |
| Second | Burner fouling and assembly | Spillage in the ports and caps refitted out of position, almost always after a cleaning. |
| Third | Flame supervision faults | Burners that light and go out. |
| Fourth | Oven igniter decline | The gas-oven fault that develops over weeks: slow preheat, then no heat at all. |
Before you touch it
Safety
If you smell gas, do not switch anything on or off, leave the building, and call the gas utility or the emergency number from outside; do not look for the leak yourself. Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel, and never adjust or disconnect a gas connection, valve or regulator.
When to call a technician
Anything involving a valve, a regulator, a supervision device, a gas connection or an oven igniter is qualified work. Washing burner caps and heads, clearing ports and drying an electrode is owner work and it resolves a large share of the complaints above. A fault that repeats at the same point in a cycle has already named its own circuit.

The limits of this page
This page is generalized across every Brown, Royal Rose, Summit, Imperial and Brentwood gas range family and model line. Where a more specific page exists for the problem you actually have, it is linked below and it is the better answer: go there rather than working from this one.
