In one paragraph
This page maps the common gas-range complaints and, for each one, says which side of that line it falls on. The first rule overrides everything else: if you smell gas, leave the building and call from outside. Everything below is written for Avanti gas ranges as a class, and each entry links down to the page that carries the diagnosis.
What goes wrong, and where it is covered
- A burner clicks but will not light — Usually blocked ports or a wet igniter. See the no-heat page — it is owner-fixable.
- The burner goes out when the knob is released — The flame-supervision probe is not being heated. See the no-heat page.
- The flame is yellow or uneven — A combustion problem. Clean the ports and seat the cap; if it persists, call.
- Continuous clicking after the burner lights — Moisture or a misplaced cap confusing the flame detection. See the noise page.
- The oven heats unevenly or not at all — Igniter or thermostat, and on a gas oven that is technician work.
- A hiss with nothing lit, or any gas smell — Leave the building and call the gas utility or emergency services from outside. Change nothing on your way out.
Ranked causes on this platform
- Blocked ports and misplaced burner caps — First across the whole category. Boil-overs block the ports, and caps get refitted slightly out of position after cleaning; between them they cause most no-light, uneven-flame and clicking complaints.
- Wet or dirty igniters — Second, and it is the reason so many faults appear right after a clean: liquid in the igniter stops the spark until everything dries thoroughly.
- Flame-supervision probes needing cleaning — Third. The probe has to be heated by the flame to hold the valve open, and a coated probe lets the burner die the moment the knob is released.
- Oven ignition and thermostat faults — Fourth, and on the technician side of the line: the oven burner and its safety valve are not owner-accessible components.
- Gas supply, valve and regulator faults — Least common and entirely licensed work. If no burner lights at all, this is the class, and the appliance stops being a do-it-yourself proposition.
A summary of the classes above
General guidance| Problem class | Where to look first | Usually an owner fix? |
|---|---|---|
| Clicks but will not light | Clean ports, dry the igniter | Often |
| Dies when the knob is released | Clean the flame probe | Often |
| Yellow or uneven flame | Reseat the cap, clear the ports | Sometimes |
| Continuous clicking | Dry everything and reseat the cap | Often |
| Oven will not heat | Technician — gas oven ignition | No |
| Gas smell or hiss | Leave and call from outside | No |

The safety boundary on this repair
Safety
Turn off the gas at the appliance valve and kill the power before any part comes off. Reassemble burner caps and heads squarely: a cap sitting proud is the most common cause of a soot-yellow flame, and a yellow flame on a properly-adjusted appliance is a combustion problem to report, not to tune out.
When to call a technician
The line on a gas appliance is not a matter of confidence or tools: cleaning burner caps, heads, ports, igniters and flame probes with the gas off and the surface cold is owner work, and everything that opens a gas joint, changes an orifice or adjusts a valve is licensed work. Call for a yellow flame that survives a clean, for an oven that will not light, and for any burner that dies with a clean probe. And if you smell gas: change nothing, leave the building and call the gas utility or emergency services from outside.

Scope of this page
This page is generalized across the Avanti gas range line: it covers the appliance class rather than one family or one model line. Where a family- or model-specific page exists for your unit it is the better answer and it is linked from this page — check the model label before you rely on anything here. What is deliberately not on this page: wiring colours, board part numbers, torque figures and teardown order, all of which differ by family and belong on the page for that family.
