The short answer
When an oven will not begin a cycle, the control is nearly always waiting for a condition rather than broken. Clock and timer settings alone account for a large share of these. The hardware on this kind of appliance rarely surprises anyone; the supervision around it is where the ambiguity lives. The appliance itself is the best diagnostic tool you have: what works tells you as much as what does not.
What the appliance is doing
- An indication of a lock, a timer or a programme — The oven telling you it is waiting rather than failing.
- The oven works in one mode only — Not a start fault at all, but a mode or element fault.
- A blank display after a power cut — A clock that needs setting before the oven will accept a cycle.
- NEAR MISS: the oven starts and then goes cold — That is a heating or limiter fault rather than a start fault.
Ranked causes
- Clock, timer or programme set — Most likely here. It leads on an oven of this class because the control will not accept a manual cycle while any programme is pending, and it does not explain itself when it refuses. Many ovens will not run manually while a timed programme is pending or the clock has never been set after a power cut. The most common cause of all and free to fix.
- Control lock or cleaning lock engaged — Next most likely. A panel lock, or a door lock left engaged after a cleaning cycle, refuses everything and looks exactly like a failure.
- Door switch or lock not confirming — Third in the order. The oven checks the door state before it will run some modes, and a switch that has not made will simply refuse.
- Missing or partial supply — Then this one. On a heavy circuit, losing part of the supply leaves the controls alive and nothing else working.
- Body: These are ordered for this brand and appliance rather than for the appliance class in general, and the ordering is qualitative.
The order of checks
- Check the clock and cancel any timer or programme — A pending programme blocks a manual cycle on most ovens.
- Look for a lock indicator, including a cleaning-cycle lock — A locked door after a cleaning cycle refuses everything.
- Check the breaker, including both halves of a heavy circuit — Controls alive with nothing heating is the classic partial-supply pattern.
- Body: The order below checks the conditions the oven is waiting on before anything is suspected of failing.
The checks you can do yourself
- Set the clock if it is blank or flashing — This alone resolves a large share of ovens that will not start.
- Cancel any timer, delay or programme — Use the documented gesture rather than switching off at the wall.
- Reset the breaker once if it has tripped, and check both halves of the circuit — If it trips again, stop and treat it as an electrical fault.
- STOP before removing the control fascia or a rear panel — Those are live, high-current assemblies.
Before you touch it
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel; a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never defeat a door lock, particularly after a cleaning cycle, because the lock holds a cavity that can still be at cleaning temperature.
When to call a technician
Call when the clock is set, the programmes are cancelled, no lock is engaged, the supply is proven at both halves of the circuit, and the oven still refuses. That pattern points at a control or a limiter and both need a meter to confirm. If the fault followed a cleaning cycle, say so: that is diagnostic information.
