An oven that trips its breaker, smells of burning insulation or scorches a connection is showing a fault on a circuit that carries a great deal of current. Isolate it and stop using it rather than testing it again. This is a heavy, well-made appliance with a fragile decision-maker on top of it, and that combination shapes the order below. Establish what the appliance can still do before asking what has failed.
Symptoms and near misses
- The breaker trips when the oven calls for heat — An element or its wiring breaking down as soon as it is energised.
- A burning smell of insulation rather than food — Wiring or a connection overheating near the cavity.
- Scorching or discolouration at the connection block or plug — A terminal making heat instead of contact on a heavy circuit.
- NEAR MISS: a smell of burning food residue during a hot cycle — That is the cavity rather than the wiring, and it clears.
What is usually behind it, in order
- Element breaking down to earth — First, and first for a reason. It leads on an oven of this class because the elements work hard in a cavity used at high temperature, and they fail by breaking down rather than by going open. The most common cause of an oven that trips protection. It fails at the moment it is energised, which is why the timing is so consistent.
- Loose or overheated connection at the terminal block — Second. An oven connection carries a lot of current, and one that has loosened makes heat every time the appliance heats.
- Heat-damaged wiring near the cavity — Third. Insulation hardens and cracks with repeated heating, particularly where a cooling fan has stopped working.
- Cooling fan failure causing heat damage — Fourth. The underlying cause of many of the wiring faults above rather than a fault in its own right.

Check in this order, and why
- Switch the circuit off at the breaker — Everything else here is done on a dead appliance.
- Note exactly when the trip or smell occurs — At switch-on, at preheat, at grill, or during cleaning: each names a circuit.
- Look for scorching at the connection and at any visible element — Discolouration and blistering are direct evidence.
- Body: The order below is carried out with the circuit isolated. There is no owner-side live test for this class of fault.
Step by step, safely
- Isolate at the breaker and leave the oven unused — Do not run a cycle to reproduce the fault.
- Note the mode and the moment at which it happens — This is the most useful information a technician can be given.
- Look at the visible elements for breaks, blisters or arc marks — Do this cold and with the power off.

- STOP. Do not open the rear panel or the connection block — That is a high-current connection and it is not an owner task.

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel; a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. If anyone has felt a shock from the appliance, leave the circuit off until it has been checked.
