The short answer
Appliances at this end of the market are generously made and electronically supervised, which means the cheap causes present exactly like the expensive ones. The checks are few by design, and between them they settle most of these complaints.
What the appliance is doing
- Heating is much weaker than it used to be — A gradual decline, which is the usual way a magnetron ages.
- A loud buzz or hum while heating — A high-voltage component under stress, and a reason to stop using the appliance.
- A burning smell during operation — Stop immediately: this is not a performance complaint.
- NEAR MISS: nothing runs at all — That is a start or supply fault and it belongs on a different page.
Ranked causes
- Demonstration mode or a very low power setting — Most likely here. It leads on an appliance of this class because retail units are displayed in a mode that suppresses heating, and that mode survives into the kitchen. A retail mode that runs the lights and the turntable without energising anything. It reaches homes more often than people expect and costs nothing to rule out.
- Magnetron or high-voltage circuit failure — Next most likely. The dominant cause of a microwave that runs without heating, and entirely a technician matter because of the stored energy involved.
- Loading and the food itself — Third in the order. A small or very cold load, a dish that absorbs energy, or food packed too deep all produce a complaint of poor heating without any fault.
- Thermal protection open — Then this one. A protector that has opened after an overheat or after running empty stops the heating side while leaving everything else working.
- Body: The order below is what makes this page worth reading. It is a ranking rather than a measurement, and it carries no numbers because no fact bundle supports any.
The order of checks
- Check for a demonstration mode and for the power level setting — Both produce an appliance that runs without heating and cost nothing to clear.
- Heat a cup of water on full power and time it against how it used to behave — It is the only reliable comparison an owner can make.
- Check the vents are clear and the appliance has clearance — Blocked ventilation causes repeated cut-outs that look like a heating fault.
- Body: The order below rules out everything free before it reaches a conclusion that is not an owner repair.
The checks you can do yourself
- Clear any demonstration mode and set full power — Consult the panel for the documented gesture.
- Test with a mug of cold water on full power — A control test with a known load is far more useful than a plate of leftovers.
- Clear the vents and give the appliance clearance on all sides — Built-in units in tight housings overheat and cut out.
Tools: vacuum
- STOP. Never remove the cabinet — The capacitor can hold a lethal charge after the appliance is unplugged.
Before you touch it
Safety
Unplug the appliance before inspecting anything, and never remove its outer cabinet: a microwave contains a high-voltage capacitor that can hold a lethal charge after the power is off. Never run a microwave empty, never defeat a door interlock, and stop using an appliance that buzzes loudly, arcs inside the cavity or smells of burning.
When to call a technician
Call, or decide on replacement, once a demonstration mode and the power setting have been ruled out and a cup of water still will not heat. Everything beyond that point is on the high-voltage side, and there is no owner-side step of any kind. A fault that followed a spill or a move is usually the spill or the move.

The limits of this page
This page is written for the appliance class rather than for one Breville family or model line. Where a family- or model-specific page exists for your unit it is the more specific answer and should be preferred over this one; the brand and appliance hub linked below routes to everything more specific that exists today.
