Notice when it misbehaves
If the panel goes strange while a pan is boiling below and recovers later, moisture is the cause and the fix is ventilation rather than electronics. If it misbehaves from cold with nothing cooking, the panel or the control is genuinely in question. That distinction is free and it decides the whole investigation.
What you observe
- The panel responds to the wrong pad while cooking below — Moisture across the touch surface, which conducts between adjacent pads.
- Pads work normally again once the kitchen has cleared — The strongest possible confirmation that steam rather than a component is the cause.
- The display shows a code and the microwave will not run — A genuine reported condition, and worth photographing before clearing.
- The panel is unresponsive from cold with nothing cooking — This is the case that is not about steam, and it is a narrower investigation.
- The microwave runs but the turntable does not turn — A different complaint entirely, and not a control question.
- NEAR MISS: nothing lights and the vent fan is dead too — That is a supply question, checked at the breaker.
Ranked for this mounting
- Steam and heat from the cooktop reaching the panel — First, and by a distance. The appliance is mounted where that column of air arrives, and the symptom tracks cooking rather than time.
- Grease film on the touch surface — Second. It builds slowly above a stove and it changes how the panel reads a finger, producing wrong-pad behaviour even when dry.
- The door not registering as closed — Third. The appliance will not run without a confirmed door, and that refusal presents at the panel.
- The control board — Last. Above a cooktop it is far more often affected by the first cause than failing independently.
Cooking, then cleaning
- Test the panel with nothing cooking and the kitchen clear — It separates a steam problem from a component problem immediately.
- Clean the panel and the surrounding trim thoroughly — Second cause, and grease is easy to underestimate on an appliance in this position.
- Use the vent fan whenever the cooktop is in use — It addresses the top cause directly and costs nothing but a habit.
- Only then treat a code as pointing at a component — Two free explanations sit in front of it and both are common.
Owner steps
- Operate every pad with the kitchen cool and nothing cooking — A panel that behaves perfectly cold has told you the fault is environmental.
About 10 min
- Clean the touch panel and trim with a damp cloth and a little detergent — Do not spray anything directly at the panel; dampen the cloth instead.
Tools: cloth, detergentAbout 10 min
- Clean or replace the grease filters underneath the appliance — Blocked filters push more of the cooktop plume forward across the panel.
Tools: warm water, detergentAbout 20 min
- Run the vent fan on high whenever the cooktop is used and retest — It is the direct fix for the top cause and it costs nothing to try.
About 15 min
- STOP: never remove the outer cabinet of a microwave — There is a high-voltage capacitor inside that can hold a dangerous charge long after the power is off.
The rule that matters most here
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel, and understand that this appliance is different: a microwave contains a high-voltage capacitor that can hold a dangerous charge even after being unplugged. Never remove its outer cabinet. Leave the door latches and their switches exactly as the factory fitted them, because they are what stops the appliance running with the door open. An over-the-range unit is also heavy and mounted overhead.
When to call
Call if the panel misbehaves from cold with a clean surface, if the appliance runs when the door is open, or if it will not switch off. Any of those is a same-day call. Call also if there is a burning smell, arcing inside the cavity, or if the appliance trips the breaker. Nothing inside the cabinet is an owner repair, and that is about the capacitor rather than the difficulty.

Scope
Written for the Samsung microwave class rather than one model line, and mainly for over-the-range installations. Panel layouts, filter types and mounting details differ by family and belong on the page for your specific appliance. Nothing here is an owner repair behind the cabinet, by design.
