What this usually means
Most gas range noise is combustion noise: a roar from a burner running rich, a pop as a burner lights or goes out, or a whistle from a fouled port. Each says something specific about the burner it comes from. Mass-market hardware fails honestly: what does not work usually does not work for a reason you can see, hear or feel. Each step below eliminates a circuit rather than a component, which is what makes the order worth following.
The observable signs
- A pop or bang as a burner lights or is turned off — Delayed ignition, or gas continuing briefly after the flame is cut.
- A whistle or a hiss from one burner only — A partly blocked port or a cap that is not seated.
- Continuous clicking even after a burner has lit — A wet or fouled spark electrode telling the module to keep trying.
- NEAR MISS: a hiss with no burner lit and a smell of gas — That is not a noise complaint. Leave the building and call the gas utility from outside.
Most likely first
- Burner cap not seated correctly — First, and first for a reason. It leads because a cap seated a fraction out of position changes the flame pattern immediately and is the commonest change after any cleaning. The most common cause of a burner that suddenly sounds different, and nearly always follows a cleaning.
- Fouled or partly blocked burner ports — Second. Distorts the flame pattern and produces whistling, roaring and uneven burning on the affected burner only.
- Spark module clicking continuously — Third. A wet or dirty electrode keeps the module sparking after the flame is established, which is annoying and is also telling you the electrode is fouled.
- Delayed ignition — Fourth. Gas accumulating before it lights produces the pop.
- Body: These are ordered for this brand and appliance rather than for the appliance class in general, and the ordering is qualitative.
What to check first, and why that first
- Identify which burner the noise comes from — One burner is hardware; every burner at once points upstream at regulation.
- Note when the noise happens: lighting, running, or switching off — Each timing points at a different cause.
- Look at the flame pattern on the affected burner — Lifting, yellow or uneven flames are visible evidence.
- Body: The order below is done cold, and it stops at anything that is not a burner part you can lift off by hand.
What an owner can safely check
- Turn everything off and let the range cool completely — Nothing here is done on a warm appliance.
- Dry the spark electrode — Continuous clicking after lighting usually stops once it is dry.

- Refit the burner parts squarely and observe the flame again — A correctly seated cap sounds different immediately.
- STOP at anything involving a valve, a regulator or a gas connection — That is qualified work in every jurisdiction.

If you smell gas, do not switch anything on or off, leave the building, and call the gas utility or the emergency number from outside; do not look for the leak yourself. Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel, and never adjust or disconnect a gas connection, valve or regulator yourself.
The point at which to call someone
Call a qualified engineer for any noise that affects every burner at once, for repeated delayed ignition, and for anything that comes from the regulator or a valve. A single burner that whistles or roars after cleaning is usually the cap, and that is yours to correct. Note whether the fault appears from cold or only once the appliance is hot.
