The short answer
A freezer that is running and still warm is failing to move heat out, and the causes divide neatly into things around the cabinet and things inside the sealed system. - Food at the top of a chest cabinet is thawing while the bottom is still frozen

Likely causes, most likely first
- Frost slab on the evaporator — Why here: a thick frost layer insulates the very surface that is supposed to absorb heat, and on a manual-defrost cabinet it is the expected answer rather than an exception — Confirmed by: frost thicker than a coin over the evaporator surface or the inner walls
- Lid or door not sealing — Why here: a continuous humidity and heat load that explains both the warm cabinet and the frost that caused it — Confirmed by: condensation at the frame, a gasket that fails a paper test, or a lid resting on a package

Check in this order

- Check the room the cabinet is standing in — Because: ambient conditions explain most seasonal freezer complaints and no part will fix them

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. A loaded freezer is extremely heavy. Empty it before moving it, and never tip a cabinet on your own. The sealed refrigerant circuit is not owner-serviceable. Do not cut, bend or braze any tube.
When to call a technician
