What this means on these models
Before the cabinet comes apart, check the seal and the drain port. On the HS family those two account for most of what owners report as a leak, and neither needs a tool.
What you observe
- A wet patch behind the cabinet — That is the drain pan or its seat rather than the drain port, and it means the front stays dry while the wall behind does not.
- NEAR MISS - an oily film in the water — Oil means the sealed system is open. Unplug the cabinet and call a technician; this is no longer a drain question.
- A sheet of ice growing across the compartment floor — Each defrost adds a layer because the water cannot leave, so the ice arrives before the puddle.
- NEAR MISS - condensation on the outside in a humid room — A cold cabinet in warm damp air makes its own water, and nothing is leaking at all.
- A pool of clear water at the front of the base — It returns within a day of being mopped and is at cabinet temperature rather than warm.
Likeliest causes first
- Door or lid seal letting humid air in — Second: the extra moisture becomes frost, the frost becomes meltwater, and the drain never had to deal with that much.
- Defrost drain blocked or frozen at the port — First on this family: the port is the narrowest part of the route and it sits in the coldest part of the cabinet.
- Base drain pan cracked or off its seat — Common after a move on an uneven floor: the pan tips and empties toward the front of the machine compartment.
- Drain trough misaligned after a panel refit — Ranks high wherever a previous repair went in, because the trough is a friction fit and does not latch.
What to check first, second, third
- Check the cabinet is level at all four corners — A cabinet leaning away from its drain sends meltwater to the wrong side of the compartment floor.
- Pull the cabinet out and look at the base pan — It takes two people, which is why it is not first, but it settles the pan and its seat in a single look.
- Dry the floor and lay paper towel front and back — The one that wets first tells you the direction the water travels, which is the only way to work backwards.
- Watch a defrost cycle end with a torch inside — The slowest check and the most conclusive: you see where the meltwater actually goes.
Power down first
Safety
Disconnect power before servicing and dry the floor before you kneel on it. Meltwater and mains share the base of these cabinets, and the floor is the real hazard in this job.
