Most no-cooling complaints on the HS line have a cheap cause and an expensive one that looks identical from the kitchen. This page puts them in the order that costs least to test.
The observable tells
- Ice forming around the door or lid seal — Warm humid air is getting in and freezing where it meets the cold. The seal is the fault and the ice is the evidence.
- Food at the top is soft while the bottom is hard — Air is not circulating, which places the fault in the fan or the airflow path rather than the sealed system.
- The cabinet is warm and completely silent — Nothing running at all is a power or start-component question, and it is a different diagnosis entirely.
- The compressor never stops — The thermostat is never satisfied, which is the picture a frost blockage or a lost seal produces.
- A thick sheet of frost across the evaporator area — Not the light dusting a working cabinet carries: a continuous sheet means the defrost cycle has stopped clearing it.
Likeliest causes first
- Door or lid seal deformed or dirty — Second, and free to check: a seal that does not grip lets humid air in continuously, which adds frost and run time together.
- Defrost cycle stalled and the evaporator iced over — First on this family: the ice blocks airflow before it stops the cooling itself, so the cabinet keeps running and keeps failing.
- Sealed-system fault or low charge — Last, because it is the least common, cannot be confirmed without gauges, and every cheaper cause produces the same complaint.
- Evaporator fan stopped — No delivery means warm upper shelves and a cabinet that cannot hold, even though the evaporator itself may be cold.
The diagnostic order for these models
- Look for a continuous frost sheet at the evaporator — Confirms the airflow blockage and points at the defrost circuit rather than at the compressor.
- Pull the cabinet out and inspect the condenser — A choked coil explains a slow decline better than any other cause, and cleaning it is both test and repair.
- Put a thermometer inside and read it after a few hours — It turns an anxious guess into a measurement, and it is the first thing a technician will ask about.
- Check the seal with a sheet of paper all the way round — Where the paper slides out with no drag, the seal is not sealing, and that is capacity leaving continuously.
Power down first
Safety
Cut the power at the breaker first, then empty the cabinet into a cooler. Working around a full freezer is how things get dropped, and a loaded lid or door is heavier than it looks.

When to stop and book a visit
Call while the food can still be saved. A freezer holds food safely at 0 degrees Fahrenheit or below, and once a cabinet has drifted above that the clock is running on everything in it.
