The short answer
On a Bosch microwave, a machine that runs with no heat at all most often comes down to a power level or mode set low. Bosch built-in microwaves depend on trim-kit clearance for cooling air, and a restricted cabinet produces faults that look electrical but are thermal. The first check below needs no tools, and the list stops where a meter on live terminals begins.
What you observe
- The turntable turns and the light works, but food stays cold — Everything except the high-voltage side is working.
- It heats weakly and takes far longer than it used to — Partial output, which is a different fault from none at all.
- A loud buzz or hum while it runs — The high-voltage side under strain.
- NEAR MISS — it will not run at all — That is a no-start fault and a different page.
Causes, most likely first on a Bosch microwave
- Power level or mode set low — Ranked first here: a combination oven has convection, grill and defrost modes that heat quite differently, and selecting the wrong one is easily mistaken for a fault.
- Restricted cooling airflow tripping a thermal cut-out — Ranked second: a built-in draws its cooling air through the trim kit, so a restricted cabinet produces heating faults that are thermal rather than electrical — and they come and go as it cools.
- Door interlock switch out of sequence — Last on this list: the interlocks must close in the right order, and one failing switch stops the high-voltage side while the display still works.
Check in this order, and why
- Reset to full power and run a timed cycle — It removes every mode and sensor from the question. First: likeliest cause, least effort.
- Note whether heating returns after the unit has stood unused — A thermal fault recovers when it cools. Second: it separates the next two causes.
- Close the door firmly and listen for the interlocks clicking — A weak or missing click is the clue. Third: only once the checks above are clean.
What an owner can safely check
- Set full power and a plain timed cycle, then heat a cup of water — The single most useful test on this appliance.
Tools: mug of waterAbout 10 min
- Check no defrost, eco or auto mode is still selected — Defrost cycles pulse the power by design.
Tools: noneAbout 5 min
- Clean or replace the grease filters underneath, or clear the trim-kit vents — Restores the cooling airflow the unit depends on.
Tools: degreaser, clothAbout 25 min
- Check nothing is stored against the vents — A built-in with blocked vents overheats every time.
Tools: noneAbout 5 min
- STOP HERE if the next step needs a meter on live terminals — That is where an owner check ends and a service call begins.

Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off.
When to call a technician
Call once the power, the door and the cycle settings are all cleared, because everything beyond that is behind a case with a charged capacitor inside it. Call immediately if you see arcing inside the cavity, smell burning, or the appliance trips its breaker — stop using it and unplug it.

What this page does not cover
This page covers Bosch microwaves as a class, not one family or model line. It reasons from how Bosch builds this appliance — enough to rank the causes, not enough for wiring colours, torque figures or part numbers, which differ by family. Where a model-specific page exists it is linked here and is the better answer; this class page has no such child yet, so nothing is withheld by omission.
