Bosch Dryer Overheating — Condenser, Sensor & Thermostat Diagnosis
Bosch heat pump dryers (WTW series) should never overheat — they operate at a maximum of 65C air temperature by design. If clothes are coming out excessively hot or the dryer exterior is too warm to touch, a temperature regulation component has failed. Condenser dryers (WGA series) run slightly hotter but still have thermal protection that should prevent overheating.
Most Common Causes
1. Clogged Condenser Causing Recirculation (35%)
Lint blocks the heat exchange. Hot air recirculates without proper cooling. Internal temperatures rise above design limits. Thermal cutouts may trip (E:04).
Fix: Clean condenser — pull from front lower panel, vacuum fins.
Parts Cost: $0 | Pro: $89–$150
2. Failed NTC Exhaust Sensor (25%)
If the exhaust NTC reads LOWER than actual temperature (resistance too high), the board allows continued heating past safe limits. Clothes exit excessively hot.
Test: Measure NTC resistance. Replace if out of range ($15–$35).
Parts Cost: $15–$35 | Pro: $120–$200
3. Thermostat/Thermal Cutout Failure (20%)
The safety thermostat should cut heating when temps exceed limits. If it fails closed (stuck in conducting position), heating continues unchecked until the thermal fuse blows.
Test continuity — it should open at rated temperature.
Parts Cost: $15–$35 | Pro: $120–$200
4. Heating Element Stuck On (12% — WGA only)
Control board relay welded shut — element receives continuous power. Element glows continuously regardless of temperature reading.
Parts Cost: $150–$350 (board) | Pro: $280–$500
5. Blocked Lint Filter (8%)
Severely clogged filter restricts air so heat concentrates in a smaller volume rather than distributing. First sign: clothes in center of drum are hot while outer items are cool.
Fix: Clean lint filter thoroughly. Check filter housing below for packed lint.
Parts Cost: $0 | Pro: $89

Safety Warning
If clothes exit too hot to handle comfortably, or if the dryer exterior (top or rear) is hot to touch — stop using immediately. Overheating is a fire risk with lint-laden components. Diagnose before next use.
Step-by-Step
- Clean lint filter and condenser — fixes 40%+ of overheating.
- Feel clothes at cycle end — should be warm, not hot (heat pump) or moderately hot (condenser).
- Check for E:04 (heat pump thermal cutout).
- Test NTC sensors with multimeter.
- If WGA: observe whether element ever cycles off during operation.

FAQ
Q: How hot should clothes be from a Bosch heat pump dryer?
Warm to the touch — not hot. Heat pump models max at 65C air temperature. Clothes exit at 40–50C. If they are uncomfortable to hold, the temperature control has failed.
