In short
A programme that runs forever on a WGH washer has normally extended itself rather than hung: these machines add time when the water is cold, when the load is unbalanced or when the fill is slow. That is not a fault yet, and it is worth ruling out before anything else.
What you observe
- The time remaining goes up instead of down — Normal adaptive behaviour when the fill is slow or the load is unbalanced, not a fault on its own.
- NEAR MISS - the cycle takes much longer than the label says — Programme times are nominal and adapt to conditions. A long cycle is not a stalled cycle.
- The cycle finishes but the drum is still full of water — A drain gate that was never satisfied, which is why the door stays locked afterwards.
- The display shows a fault and the machine stops immediately — The control has detected the failed condition itself; read what the machine says before overriding it.
- The programme time stops counting down and stays put — The machine is waiting at a step. Where the timer froze is the most useful single clue you have.
Likeliest causes first
- Drain blocked at the filter or the hose — Second, and the reason so many stalled cycles end with a full drum and a locked door: no drain, no progress, no release.
- Control board or wiring fault — Last, because every cause above produces the same stall for far less money, and because a board is diagnosed by elimination rather than by inspection.
- Restricted fill: taps part-closed or inlet filters blocked — First on this family because the machine will not proceed until it has its water, and a partly open tap produces exactly this stall.
- Pressure or level sensing reading wrong — The machine acts on a level that is not true, so it either never fills enough or believes it is already full.
Check in this order, and why
- Watch the fill rate with the drum empty — A fill that trickles is a restriction upstream, and seeing it removes the guesswork about whether the water is arriving.
- Open the drain filter and clear it — Do this early whenever the drum is holding water: it is both the test and the repair for the second-ranked cause.
- Check the drain hose height and that it is not pushed deep into the standpipe — An installation fault rather than a component fault, and one that produces an intermittent stall that looks electrical.
- Run the shortest programme available with an empty drum — Removes the load and the heating variables at once and shows whether the basic sequence can complete at all.
Before any panel comes off
Safety
Pull the plug before you open anything, and leave the door lock alone. It holds the door shut while the drum is turning and while there is water in the tub; it is not the component to defeat to make a test easier.
