What is actually happening
Most no-start complaints on the WGG line resolve to four things: the supply, the door, a held child lock or delay, and a cycle that has already stalled at the fill. This page works them in that order.
Symptoms on this family
- NEAR MISS - the cycle starts and stops within a minute — That is a stalled cycle rather than a no-start, and the cycle fault page for this family covers it.
- A padlock or key symbol is showing — Child lock is engaged. It is designed to be non-obvious and it stops every input until it is cleared.
- NEAR MISS - no start after a power cut — Many machines resume or clear their state oddly after an interruption. Switch off at the wall for a minute before diagnosing.
- No lights, no display, nothing at all — That is supply: socket, plug, fuse or breaker, and it is the shortest branch of this diagnosis.
- The drum hums but does not turn — Power is reaching the motor and something is stopping the drum, so this is a jam or a motor fault rather than a no-start.
Causes, most likely first on this family
- Water not arriving so the first gate never passes — The machine accepts the start, waits for its fill, and appears to be doing nothing at all. Closed taps are the usual reason.
- Door lock mechanism failed — Distinct from a door that is not latched: here the door closes correctly and the lock still does not report, and that is a part.
- Child lock or delay start engaged — Ranks high because it produces an apparently dead machine with nothing wrong, and because it is easy to set by accident.
- Programme not actually started — On machines with a separate selection and start step it is common to leave a cycle selected and never started, especially after a power interruption.
The order the layout dictates
- Press the door firmly until it latches and listen for the lock — Second because the lock is the first gate the machine checks, and because a soft close is the commonest cause of all.
- Test the socket with a lamp or another appliance — It separates the dead-machine branch from the waiting-machine branch instantly, and it needs nothing you do not already own.
- Check the breaker and any fused spur behind the machine — Low in the order because it needs access, but it is the finding that explains a dead machine with a live-looking kitchen.
- Listen for the lock click with the door held closed — A lock that never clicks with a properly closed door has earned suspicion; one that clicks moves the diagnosis downstream.
Before any panel comes off
Safety
Disconnect power and close the inlet taps before starting. A machine that has stopped mid-cycle may still be holding a tub full of water, and that water leaves through the drain filter whether you are ready for it or not.

When to call a technician
Call once the owner-side checks are clean, or the moment the fault points at the bearings, the motor or the control board. Those need the machine stripped or a meter on a live circuit, and neither is a kitchen job.
