What goes wrong on these models, and where each one is covered
- One element or burner will not heat or will not light — Note whether it is always the same position: one dead position points at that element, its switch or its igniter, several at once at the supply or the control.
- The glass surface is cracked, chipped or pitted — Stop using that zone immediately. A cracked surface is an electrical and a cut hazard, and it does not heal.
- On an induction top, the pan is not detected or the unit buzzes — Cookware that is not ferrous, or a base that is not flat. A magnet on the pan base settles it in seconds.
- An indicator or hot-surface light stays on after everything is off — The residual-heat indicator is doing its job while the glass is hot. One that never clears is a sensor or control fault worth reporting.
The problem classes, in the order they bring these units to a technician
- A burner or element that will not heat or will not light — First: it takes a cooktop out of service most often, and one dead position points somewhere very different from several.
- Ignition and spark faults on a gas burner — Second: ignition faults leave a burner that will not light or will not stop clicking — usually a cap and a clean.
- Touch controls that do not respond — Third: unresponsive controls are usually a wet panel or an engaged lock, which is why they rank above the surface.
- A damaged glass surface — Fourth and least common — but a cracked surface takes the appliance out of service immediately, whatever its rank.

Before anything is opened
Safety
Isolate the cooktop at the breaker before any panel, cap or trim is disturbed; a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. If you smell gas, do not touch a switch — leave the building and call the gas utility from outside.
What is an owner job on these models, and what is not
Cleaning, drying, reseating a burner cap, clearing a lock and resetting the breaker once are owner work on these models. Anything requiring the cooktop to be lifted from the counter is not — the connections underneath are a live supply or a gas line and often both in the same cavity.
