The short answer
Before anything else, work out which kind of cooler you own, because these names cover two quite different machines: a compressor unit that cools like a refrigerator, and a thermoelectric unit that can only pull a fixed amount below the room temperature. A thermoelectric unit has so little cooling capacity in reserve that a marginal seal disables it completely, while a compressor unit simply runs longer. A refrigerator holds food safely at 40 °F (4 °C) or below.
