The short answer
A Bodega undercounter cooler that runs but will not get cold is nearly always failing to reject heat. Clear the front grille, and confirm the unit was actually built for an enclosed opening. Door seal and ambient temperature come next; the sealed system is last.
What you observe
- Cans stay at room temperature while the unit runs constantly — Long runs with a warm cabinet mean heat is not leaving.
- The grille and the kickboard area feel hot — Rejected heat is trapped in the opening instead of the room.
- It cools well in winter and badly in summer — A marginal airway shows itself as soon as the room warms.
- Condensation on the inside of the glass door — Warm humid air entering past a seal that no longer closes.
- NEAR MISS - warm for a few hours after loading warm cans — A small cabinet takes time to pull down a full load. Not a fault.
Causes, most likely first on this brand
- A blocked or restricted front grille — First by a wide margin. The grille is the only airway; a flush kickboard, a mat or a grille furred with dust stops the heat leaving, and the unit never reaches temperature.
- A freestanding model installed under a counter — Second, and the cause owners never suspect. A rear-venting cooler needs open air behind it; fitted into a closed opening it recirculates its own hot exhaust and can never win.
- A high ambient temperature around the opening — Third. Undercounter units sit beside ovens and dishwashers, and a hot neighbour raises the air it must reject heat into.
- A door seal that no longer closes — Fourth. A glass door is heavy for its size, and a seal fouled with spills or a hinge that has dropped lets a continuous ribbon of warm air in.
- A sealed-system or compressor fault — Last, and the only one that is not an owner check. Reached by elimination, never by guessing first.
Check in this order, and why
- Clear the grille completely and give it a day — The likeliest cause and the cheapest test on this page.
- Check whether the model is rated for built-in use — A rear-venting unit in a closed opening cannot be fixed by cleaning.
- Feel the air at the grille while it runs — Warm moving air means the fan is working; still air means it is not.
- Test the door seal with a sheet of paper all round — Close on the paper and pull; it should drag everywhere.

- Vacuum the grille and remove anything in front of it — Include the louvres, and lift any kickboard trim that sits flush against them.

Safety
Unplug the cooler or switch off its breaker before removing the grille or any panel - a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Keep the cabinet upright while moving it; a small compressor unit laid on its side needs to stand for hours before it is run again. Never remove the grille and leave it running, because the grille also guards a moving fan.
When to call a technician
Call when the grille is clear, the unit is genuinely a built-in model, the seal is sound and it still will not cool - especially if it fails in open air too. Call sooner if the cabinet cools in winter and fails in summer with a clean grille, because that is a marginal system rather than a blocked one. Call immediately if you smell burning or see oil near the compressor.
