The short answer

- A blocked drain channel or drain hole — First. The channel at the base of the cold plate silts with dust and spilled drink, and meltwater then collects inside the cabinet instead of leaving it.
- A condensate tray that has overflowed — Second, and a summer fault. The tray evaporates at the rate the compressor heats it; in a humid room the cabinet makes water faster than that, and the excess goes on the floor.
- A door that does not seal or self-close — Third, and the multiplier behind both. More humid air in means more frost, which means more meltwater than the drain was designed to carry.
- A cabinet that is not level — Fourth. Tilted forward, the meltwater runs to the front of the interior instead of into the channel at the back.
- A cracked or displaced tray — Last, usually the result of the cabinet having been moved. It drips onto the floor with a dry interior above.
Check in this order, and why
- Decide whether the water is inside the cabinet or behind it — Inside means the drain channel; behind means the tray.
- Find the drain hole at the base of the rear wall — Dust or ice visible in it is the answer.
- Check the door seals and self-closes — Humid air is the fuel for everything on this list.
- Look at the tray above the compressor — Overflowing, cracked or knocked askew are all visible.

Unplug the cooler before moving it or reaching behind it - a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and water beside a live appliance deserves respect. Never clear a drain hole with wire or a screwdriver; the cold plate punctures easily and that ends the appliance. Empty the cabinet before moving it, because a loaded glass-door unit is top-heavy and the pane does not survive a fall.
When to call a technician
Call when the drain is clear, the cabinet is level, the door seals and water still collects. That means the drain path behind the rear panel or a tray that cannot be reached, neither of which is owner work. Call sooner if the floor beneath the cabinet is staining or lifting, because a slow leak under a heavy unit is found late and costs more than the repair.
