- Door seal perished, displaced or fouled — Second: the door gasket runs around the whole opening, takes wear every time the door closes, and traps debris along its lower edge.
- Wrong detergent or too much of it — First on the list because it costs nothing to establish and because it accounts for a startling share of dramatic one-off leaks.
- Pump seal or tub seam failed — Last, and it is not an owner repair under any circumstances.

Check in this order, and why
- Run a finger along the whole door seal — Look for splits, a perished edge, debris trapped underneath, or a section that has come out of its channel.
- Dry everything and lay paper down before running a cycle — Paper shows you where the first drop lands, which a wet floor cannot.
- Ask what detergent was used — Hand dishwashing liquid, or a heavy overdose of powder, produces suds that carry water out of a machine with nothing wrong with it.
- The access logic behind this sequence — Each step above is ordered by how much it rules out per minute spent. On this family that puts the external and audible checks first and anything requiring a panel last, which is the opposite of the order most people work in instinctively.

Isolate power and water first, in that order, and put a towel down before you tilt anything. A dishwasher holds more water in its sump than it looks like it should, and it goes where the floor slopes.
When to call a technician
Bring somebody in at once if the machine trips its breaker, if water has reached the floor under the cabinet, or if it runs a cycle without ever heating. Those three are not worth another test cycle at home.
