The short answer
On the DWDI models a drainage failure is most often a filter full of debris, a hose that has been kinked or set wrongly, or a blocked air gap or waste connection. All three are reachable and all three come before the pump.
What you observe
- A stale smell from the base — Standing water and trapped debris. It arrives with a slow drain rather than a sudden failure.
- Dirty water appears in the sink when the machine drains — A shared waste connection backing up. The machine is healthy and the restriction is in the plumbing.
- Nothing audible at the drain step at all — Points past the filter at the pump or its supply, which is the other half of this list.
- The pump can be heard running with nothing leaving — A blockage rather than an electrical fault. The pump has power and is working against something.
Causes, most likely first
- A filter and sump packed with debris — First on this family and it is not close. Everything the load lets go ends here, the filter is designed to be opened by hand, and a machine that has never had it cleaned will eventually stop draining whatever else is healthy.
- A failed drain pump or its supply — Last. Silence at the drain step rather than a straining pump is what actually points here, and it is behind the base panel either way.
- A kinked or crushed drain hose — Second. The hose runs in a tight space behind or beside the machine, and pushing the unit home folds it.
- A missing high loop or air gap — Without a rise in the drain route the waste line can feed back into the machine, so water returns after it has been pumped out. It is an installation cause and it is common after a machine is moved or re-plumbed.
Check in this order
- Pull the machine forward and follow the drain hose end to end — Look for a fold behind the cabinet and a crush point where the unit was pushed home.
- Rerun with the correct detergent dose and no added products — Removes suds from the list at no cost.
- Isolate the machine, bail the base and take the filter out — The leading cause on this family.
- Run the sink and watch the shared waste while the machine drains — Settles whether the restriction is the appliance or the plumbing before any part is bought.
