The short answer
Dishes coming out dirty on a DWDI dishwasher is almost always a water-delivery problem rather than a failing machine. Something is stopping the spray reaching the load - a blocked arm, a loaded rack, a filter full of debris - and every one of those is owner territory on this family.
What you observe
- The upper rack cleans and the lower does not, or the reverse — One spray arm is not turning or is not getting water.
- Dishes are clean but come out wet — A drying rather than a cleaning fault, and often a rinse-aid or a temperature story.
- Redeposited grit and food particles — The filter is full and the machine is washing with water it has already dirtied.
- A white film or chalky residue on everything — Water chemistry, rinse aid or dose rather than mechanical failure.
Causes, most likely first
- A filter or sump full of debris — First on this family. The wash water is recirculated, so a full filter means the machine spends the whole cycle washing with what it took off the last load.
- Water arriving too cool — Cycles assume a certain incoming temperature. A long run of cold pipe, or a supply connected cold on a model that expects hot, leaves the machine washing below what will shift grease.
- Spray arm holes blocked, or an arm that cannot turn — Second. Seeds, labels and fragments block the small jets, and a tall item in the rack will stop an arm turning altogether.
- Detergent type, dose or age — Old or damp detergent, the wrong type for the cycle, or a dispenser blocked by a tall item all reduce what the wash can do. It is cheap to rule out and often the answer.
- Rinse aid empty or set too low — Mostly a drying and spotting cause rather than a cleaning one, but it is what most film complaints turn out to be.
Check in this order
- Spin each spray arm by hand and hold it up to the light — Blocked jets are visible, and an arm that will not turn freely has either debris in its bearing or something in the rack stopping it.
- Check the detergent is fresh and the dispenser opens freely — A dispenser blocked by a tall item will hold its dose for the entire cycle.
- Remove and rinse the filter and check the sump under it — The leading cause on this family, and a routine task rather than a repair.
- Run the nearest hot tap until it is hot before starting a cycle — Clears the cold standing in the pipe, which is the commonest reason a machine washes cooler than its cycle expects.

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never mix dishwasher detergent with any other cleaning chemical in the machine, and do not use products that are not intended for a dishwasher.
