The short answer
The short answer for a BlitzHome dishwasher: poor results on a countertop machine are nearly always a blocked filter, a blocked spray arm or a load that shields itself. All three are free to check and clear. A machine that still washes badly after that points at the pump or the heater.
What you actually see
- White chalky marks on glassware — Chalky deposits are water hardness rather than dirt.
- A gritty film on glasses and plates — Film that rubs off is redeposited soil rather than water spotting.
- Items come out wet rather than dirty — Wet dishes are a drying question rather than a cleaning one.
- The top rack cleans and the bottom does not — A split between racks points at a spray arm rather than at the wash.
Causes, ranked for this dishwasher
- Spray arm holes blocked — The usual answer. the arms have small holes that block with food debris and hard-water scale, and a countertop machine has fewer of them to spare. If this is the answer, the rest of the list stops mattering entirely.
- Filter blocked — The runner-up. it is the single most productive maintenance item on a dishwasher and the most neglected. Where this checks out clean, treat the next entry as the working theory rather than a possibility.
- Loading blocking the spray — Third. a tall item, an upturned bowl or an overlapping plate shields everything behind it, and a small machine has little tolerance for it. A clean result here does not just remove one part; it removes everything that depends on it.
What to check, in order
- First — the spray arm jets — Turn each arm by hand with the racks out. An arm that does not spin freely cannot cover the load.
- Second — the filter in the base — Twist the filter out of the base, rinse it under a tap with a brush, and refit it until it locks.
Checks an owner can do safely
- Step 1. Reload with space between items — Load so nothing overlaps or overhangs, then run the same load again and compare.

- Step 2. Run a descaling cycle — Use a dishwasher cleaner on an empty hot cycle, then compare results over the following week.

- Step 3. Clear the spray arm holes — Lift each arm out, hold it to the light, and clear blocked holes with a cocktail stick before refitting.

Safety
Close the supply valve and unplug the appliance before a hose is touched. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Have towels and a shallow tray ready — a hose that has been under pressure will empty itself the moment it is loosened.
When this becomes a service call
The line is not about confidence, it is about what the next step needs. A machine that never gets hot on any programme is a heating fault rather than a cleaning one, and it needs a meter.

What follows is family-agnostic. It names the fault, ranks the causes and gives the order to check them, and it deliberately does not name a board revision, a part number or a model-specific tolerance. Those belong on the family and model pages beneath this one, which are linked under Related pages.
