The short answer
On a Black+Decker washer, water tracking along the base plate emerges away from where it started, which is why the source is so often mis-identified. Paper towels and one cycle place it properly; guessing from the puddle wastes an afternoon.
What you actually see
- A leak only during the fill step — Timing the leak against the cycle step narrows the list immediately.
- Water dripping from the faucet adapter — A portable machine connects to a tap, and the adapter is the most common leak point.
- A slow drip that only shows after several loads — Small weeps take time to become visible and are hardest to place.
- Water at the back only — A rear leak points at the fill hoses or the drain connection.
Causes, ranked for this washer
- Pump filter cover not sealed after cleaning — Most likely — the cover is opened for maintenance and cross-threaded or left a quarter turn loose, and it then weeps at every drain. A clean result here does not just remove one part; it removes everything that depends on it.
- Door or lid seal leaking — Common — it produces a front-floor leak that appears during wash rather than during fill or drain. It is worth being sure about this one rather than half-sure, since everything after it assumes a verdict.
- Tub or internal hose split — Regular — an internal split leaks under the machine with no visible source, and it is last because everything above it is visible from outside. This is the entry most often blamed correctly and diagnosed carelessly, so take the extra minute.
What to check, in order
- First — the filter cover — Dry the area completely and watch it through one full cycle.
- Second — the door seal — Pull back the fold of the seal and run a finger round it, looking for grit, hair and small tears.
Checks an owner can do safely
- Step 1. Check the tap adapter — Dry the adapter and hose connection, open the tap, and watch for a bead. Check the rubber washer in the adapter and the hose end.

- Step 2. Clean the detergent drawer — Pull the drawer out, wash it and its housing, and check the jets above it are clear before refitting.
Tools: warm soapy water, brushAbout 15 min
- Step 3. Reduce the detergent dose — Use the dose the manual specifies for a small machine and run several loads. Overdosing produces overflow that looks like a leak.

Safety
Two isolations, not one: power at the plug or breaker, water at the supply valve. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Standing water under an energized appliance is an electrical hazard first and a plumbing problem second.
When this becomes a service call
Where the owner side ends is easy to state. Any leak that has reached the outlet or the base of the cabinet is an electrical question first: isolate the circuit before using the machine again.
