The short answer
On a Black+Decker washer, a smell that comes back within days means the source was never reached. The seal fold, the drawer housing and the filter are the three places a cycle does not clean, and all three are owner work.
What you actually see
- Laundry that smells stale straight after washing — A smell transferring to clean laundry means the machine is the source.
- Slime in the detergent drawer or its housing — Residue in the dispenser feeds growth and smells on its own.
- Dark specks left on light-coloured washing — Specks are dislodged biofilm and they mark a machine that needs more than one clean.
- Black or grey marks in the fold of the door seal — Visible growth in the seal fold is the most common finding.
Causes, ranked for this washer
- Detergent drawer and housing soiled — Most likely — residue in the drawer and the housing behind it grows and smells on its own, and it re-seeds the drum every wash. A clean result here does not just remove one part; it removes everything that depends on it.
- Pump filter or drain hose fouled — Common — it is last because it is the least common source, but it is the one that explains a smell that survives everything else. It is worth being sure about this one rather than half-sure, since everything after it assumes a verdict.
- Growth in the door seal fold — Regular — the fold at the bottom of a front-loading seal holds water and lint permanently, and it is where visible growth appears first. This is the entry most often blamed correctly and diagnosed carelessly, so take the extra minute.
What to check, in order
- First — the drawer and its housing — Look at the roof of the housing where the jets sit. That surface is usually worse than the drawer.
- Second — the filter and hose — Close the supply, put a tray under the filter cover, open it and clear and rinse everything you find.
