The short answer
Start here. On this washer, a bead forming at the bottom of the door places the leak precisely, which most washer leaks do not. The fold and the face are owner work; a tear at the bottom is where a part is needed.
What you actually see
- Grit, hair and lint in the fold of the seal — Debris in the fold is the finding that precedes most seal failures.
- A visible tear or split in the rubber — A tear is a part rather than a clean.
- The lid on a top-loader does not sit flat — A lid seal leaks when the machine is overfilled rather than continuously.
- Water appears only at the spin — A leak confined to spin is water being thrown against a seal that is only marginally sealing.
Causes, ranked for this washer
- Seal torn or split — Top of the list: it ranks below debris because clearing the fold is free and because a tear is obvious once the fold is opened. Getting a definite answer here is worth more than a quick look at the three below it.
- Debris trapped in the seal fold — Next: grit, hair, coins and lint collect in the fold and hold it open a fraction, which leaks during the wash step only. If this is the answer, the rest of the list stops mattering entirely.
- Door not closing squarely — Then: the tell is a door that needs a second push to latch, which is a geometry symptom rather than a rubber one. Where this checks out clean, treat the next entry as the working theory rather than a possibility.
What to check, in order
- First — the seal surface — Open the fold with a thumb and look right around the circumference in good light.
- Second — the fold of the seal — Look for a shiny worn patch where debris has been sitting. That is where a tear will start.
Checks an owner can do safely
- Step 1. Clear the seal fold — Pull the fold back and run a finger right around it, removing grit, hair, lint and anything else you find, then dry it.

- Step 2. Check the door latches first time — Close it normally and note whether it latches on the first attempt, then lift it gently at the handle to feel for hinge play.

- Step 3. Watch the wash step with towels down — Lay towels at the front and watch the bottom of the door during the wash for a bead forming.

Safety
Water and power both come off first. Shut the valve, pull the plug, and only then move the appliance. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and a wet floor turns a small fault into a serious one.
When this becomes a service call
Where the owner side ends is easy to state. A leak that has reached the outlet or the base of the cabinet is an electrical question first: isolate the circuit before running the machine again.

What this page does not cover
This is the general page. It applies to Black+Decker washers broadly and deliberately avoids anything that would only be true of one family or one production run — board revisions, part numbers, code tables and torque figures all belong a level down. Where such a page exists it takes precedence over this one, and Related pages is where to find it.
