The short answer
A Black+Decker microwave showing this usually tells you one thing: a code on an oven that still heats is nearly always a stored state or a mode rather than a failed board. A power cycle and a lock check are free and settle most of these; a worn keypad is where cost enters the decision.
What you actually see
- The display shows a code with the oven otherwise working — A code on a working oven is usually a sensor or a stored state.
- The panel is dark but the interior light works — A dark display over a live oven separates the display from the supply.
- The display shows partial or flickering digits — Missing segments are a display fault, and the oven usually still works behind it.
- The oven beeps continuously — A repeating tone is an alarm state, and most are cleared by a power cycle.
Causes, ranked for this microwave
- Control left in a stuck state — The usual answer. a brief supply interruption can leave a simple controller mid-state, and it is the single most common reason a panel behaves oddly. Rule it in or out properly here; a maybe at this position costs an hour further down.
- Child lock or demo mode engaged — The runner-up. a locked oven beeps and refuses, which reads exactly like a control failure to somebody who has not met the feature. Getting a definite answer here is worth more than a quick look at the three below it.
- Membrane keypad worn or damp — Third. the printed tracks under the most-used buttons wear through, and moisture behind the panel does the same thing more suddenly. If this is the answer, the rest of the list stops mattering entirely.
What to check, in order
- First — a proper power cycle — Note whether the fault returns immediately or after days. An immediate return rules the power cycle out.
- Second — the lock and mode indicators — Hold each button in turn for several seconds and watch for a lock symbol appearing or clearing.

Safety
Unplug it, and treat the inside as off limits. The high-voltage section of a microwave remains dangerous with the power disconnected. A damaged door, a bent latch or a failed switch is a reason to stop using the oven, never a reason to work around it.

Stop and call when the next thing to do meets any of these. The case stays closed regardless. A microwave holds a dangerous charge after it is unplugged and nothing behind the panel is an owner part.
