The answer first
Electrical warning signs on a dishwasher come from a small number of places: the supply and its connections, water reaching something that should be dry, and a heating or pump circuit that has broken down internally. None of them is a wash-it-once-more situation. Fewer components means fewer failure modes, and the ones that do occur are the cheap wear items rather than anything sealed. Most of it is settled before a tool comes out.
What you observe
- Buzzing or crackling from the outlet or the machine base — Arcing, which is fire risk rather than an inconvenience.
- A hot plastic or burning smell during or after a cycle — Something in the current path is overheating, most often a connection rather than a component.
- The breaker trips when the cycle reaches the heated part — A heating circuit breaking down once it is energised and wet.
- NEAR MISS: the machine simply will not start and nothing smells or heats — That is a start or door-latch fault and it belongs on a different page.
Causes, most likely first
- Damaged supply cord or crushed cable — Most likely here. It leads because connections that have loosened are the single most common source of heat, smell and scorching on any appliance that draws hard. Cabinet installations trap cables behind the machine, and a cable pinched during installation can take years to fail.
- Loose, corroded or overheated supply connection — Next most likely. Connections make heat when they stop making contact, and a dishwasher draws hard while heating.
- Water reaching a component or junction that should stay dry — Third in the order. A slow leak from a hose, a seal or the tub finds wiring below the tub, and the fault appears at the point in the cycle where the leak is worst.
- Heating element or heat pump breaking down to earth — Then this one. An element that has failed internally trips the protective device the moment it is energised, which is why the fault appears at the same point in every cycle.

Where to start, and what comes next
- Switch the circuit off at the breaker before anything else — Every remaining check is done on a machine with no power to it.
- Look at the plug, socket and visible cable for heat damage — Discolouration, melting and a smell of hot plastic all point to the same place.
- Note exactly when in the cycle the fault appears — A trip during heating, during drain or at fill each convicts a different circuit.

Owner-side checks, step by step
- Isolate the machine at the breaker and leave it isolated — Do not run another cycle to reproduce the symptom.
- Check whether other things on the same circuit are affected — A circuit-wide symptom moves the investigation out of the appliance entirely.
- Write down the point in the cycle at which it happens — Fill, wash, heat, dry or drain: the answer narrows the fault to one circuit.
- STOP. Do not open the machine or test anything live — There is no owner-side test beyond observation for this class of symptom.

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel; a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. If you have felt a shock from the machine, leave the circuit off and do not use the appliance again until it has been checked.
When to stop and call
This whole class of symptom is a service call. Isolate the machine and have it checked if it smells hot, trips a breaker, buzzes, scorches a plug or gives anyone a shock. Say whether the machine refuses to start or stops partway: they are different faults.
