The short answer
On the MFH models a refusal to start is most often the outlet, the interlock or a cycle that has not actually been started. All three cost nothing to check and all three come before anything that needs a panel off.
What you observe
- It trips the breaker the moment it is switched on — A short rather than a start fault, and the one symptom here that means stopping immediately.
- The panel lights but nothing happens when the cycle is started — Power is present and the machine is refusing. The interlock and the fill conditions are the first two suspects.
- Some functions work and others do nothing — Power and control are both present, so the fault is narrower than a start failure.
- It starts only if the lid or door is pressed hard — A marginal interlock, and that is a complete diagnosis on its own.
Causes, most likely first
- The outlet, the plug or the circuit feeding it — First on this family. A compact washer is portable and gets plugged into whatever is nearby, which means extension leads, shared circuits and worn sockets.
- A motor or control that has cut out on heat — A machine that ran, stopped and will not restart until it has cooled is protecting itself. Leaving it to stand is a legitimate diagnostic step.
- The lid or door interlock — Second. The machine will not run without proof the drum is closed, and an interlock that has been knocked, or a door that is not quite latching, produces exactly the symptom of a dead machine that has power.
- A drum or pump that cannot turn — A foreign object jamming the drum, or debris locking the pump impeller, gives a hum and a stop rather than a cycle. It is checkable by hand once the machine is isolated.
Check in this order
- Test the socket with something else you know works — First, because a portable machine gets plugged into the nearest outlet and that outlet is the leading suspect.
- Look at whether the panel lights at all — A dead panel and a lit one are two different halves of this list, and nothing else separates them as cleanly.
- Move the cord along its length while trying to start — Last of the free checks.

Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. If the cord or the plug is hot, discoloured or damaged, stop using the machine now - a standard US household branch circuit is fifteen or twenty amps at one hundred and twenty volts and a failing connection at that current is a fire risk, not an inconvenience.

When to call
Call if the machine trips protection, if the cord or plug shows heat or damage, or if it hums and stops with a drum that turns freely. The first two are electrical and urgent; the third points at the motor or its start components, which are behind a panel.
