The short answer for these models
Ice makers fail in three places and only one of them is the ice maker. Water has to arrive, the compartment has to be cold enough to finish a batch, and the finished ice has to get out of the way of the next one. Check those three in order and the mechanism is usually exonerated. On the BD refrigerators the brand-level answer holds and the order does not: a plumbed cabinet has a second source of water and a second thing to fail, and a page that ignores which one you have sends you looking in the wrong place, so the water-path checks come before the rest on these models.
What you actually see
- How your BD unit is built — the check that comes before the list — Check the back for a supply line. Fitted, and a leak has two possible sources; absent, and there is only one.
- No ice at all, and the tray or mould is dry — A dry mould is a strong signal: the mechanism cannot fail in a way that leaves no water behind.
- Ice tastes or smells of the cabinet — The ice tastes of whatever has been in the cabinet, which is the bin and the air rather than the machine.
Causes, most likely first on this family
- Frost or a jam in the path the ice takes out — It ranks here because it imitates a failed mechanism exactly and because it is visible once you empty the bin. On a BD unit this rises to the top of the order, because the identification step above changes what it proves — so the water-path checks answer more in five minutes than the rest of the list answers in an hour.
- The fill valve, the mechanism or its heater — It sits at the bottom of the order deliberately: everything above it is cheaper, more common and checkable without tools.
What to check first, and why that order
- First — look at the mould and the bin — This one check splits the whole diagnosis in half before you touch anything.
- Second — check the shut-off arm or sensor position — Look at the arm or the sensor and make sure nothing is holding or covering it. It is a two-second check that explains a surprising share of dead ice makers. On these models this is the step the construction changes: read the result against the form you identified first, because the same finding means different things on the two.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Clear ice with warm water and patience, never with a blade, a screwdriver or a hot-air gun: the tubing and the mould behind the ice are thin and they puncture. Where a water line is fitted, shut its valve before disturbing anything, and dry the floor as you go.
Where the owner job ends
Book a visit once the supply, the shut-off arm, the bin and the compartment temperature have all been checked and ice still will not come. Book sooner if the same unit has also started running warm, because that pairing points past the ice mechanism to the cabinet itself.
