What this usually means
Burning smells, scorch marks, tripping breakers and shocks are the appliance telling you that current is going somewhere it should not. The owner-side response is isolation and inspection, not repair. Most of what follows is about conditions the machine is checking rather than parts that have failed. What follows is the practical order, not a parts list.
The observable signs
- A hot plastic or burning smell during or after a cycle — Something in the current path is overheating, most often a connection rather than a component.
- The breaker trips when the cycle reaches the heated part — A heating circuit breaking down once it is energised and wet.
- Scorching, melting or discolouration at the plug or outlet — A loose or corroded connection making heat instead of contact.
- NEAR MISS: the machine simply will not start and nothing smells or heats — That is a start or door-latch fault and it belongs on a different page.
Most likely first
- Loose, corroded or overheated supply connection — The one to suspect first. It leads on a machine of this class because the appliance is built into a run of units and its supply connection is made once, behind a cabinet, and never inspected again. Connections make heat when they stop making contact, and a dishwasher draws hard while heating. This is the most common source of a burning smell and of scorching at a plug.
- Water reaching a component or junction that should stay dry — The second suspect. A slow leak from a hose, a seal or the tub finds wiring below the tub, and the fault appears at the point in the cycle where the leak is worst.
- Heating element or heat pump breaking down to earth — Third, and less common. An element that has failed internally trips the protective device the moment it is energised, which is why the fault appears at the same point in every cycle.
- Earth or bonding fault — Fourth, and less common again. The reason a shock is possible at all.
- Body: These are ordered for this brand and appliance rather than for the appliance class in general, and the ordering is qualitative.
What to check first, and why that first
- Switch the circuit off at the breaker before anything else — Every remaining check is done on a machine with no power to it.
- Look at the plug, socket and visible cable for heat damage — Discolouration, melting and a smell of hot plastic all point to the same place.
- Note exactly when in the cycle the fault appears — A trip during heating, during drain or at fill each convicts a different circuit.
- Body: The order below is written to be done with the machine isolated. Nothing here involves energising the appliance to see what happens.
What an owner can safely check
- Isolate the machine at the breaker and leave it isolated — Do not run another cycle to reproduce the symptom.
- Check whether other things on the same circuit are affected — A circuit-wide symptom moves the investigation out of the appliance entirely.
- Write down the point in the cycle at which it happens — Fill, wash, heat, dry or drain: the answer narrows the fault to one circuit.
- STOP. Do not open the machine or test anything live — There is no owner-side test beyond observation for this class of symptom.
Read this before you start
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel; a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. If you have felt a shock from the machine, leave the circuit off and do not use the appliance again until it has been checked.

This whole class of symptom is a service call. Isolate the machine and have it checked if it smells hot, trips a breaker, buzzes, scorches a plug or gives anyone a shock. Note the point in the cycle at which it happens before you call.
