Burners that click without lighting, burners that light and go out, and an oven that never reaches temperature are three different faults. The first is ignition, the second is flame supervision, the third is usually the oven igniter or the valve it controls. Establish what the appliance can still do before asking what has failed. The most common cause of a burner that lights poorly or unevenly, and the one an owner can safely correct.
- Burner cap misaligned after cleaning — The second suspect. A cap sitting a fraction out of position stops the flame crossing the ports and is the classic after-cleaning fault.
- Oven igniter weakening — Third, and less common. A gas oven igniter has to draw enough current to open the safety valve.
- Flame supervision device not holding — Fourth, and less common again. The sensor that proves a flame is present. When it fails the burner lights and goes out the moment the knob is released.

When to stop and call
Call a qualified engineer for anything involving a valve, a regulator, a supervision device or a connection, and for an oven that preheats slowly or not at all. Call immediately, from outside the building, if you smell gas. A fault that repeats at the same point in a cycle has already named its own circuit.
