What is actually going on
On the REF line a freezer that will not hold temperature is an airflow question first, because this platform puts its evaporator behind a rear panel where frost accumulates ahead of the fan. On the models listed in the table on this page the tell is a heavy frost sheet rather than a warm cabinet, and it appears weeks before the temperature moves.
The symptoms, and their near misses
- Ice cream is soft but cubes are still solid — Soft ice cream with hard cubes means the cabinet is a little warm, not broken.
- The freezer is in a garage or an unheated room — Ambient temperature affects the thermostat, and some cabinets stop cycling properly in a cold room. The REF line is no worse than its siblings here, but it is no better either.
- The cabinet exterior is hot at the sides — Compare with how it used to feel rather than with a number.
- Food is refreezing with large crystals — Crystal growth is evidence of temperature swings.
- The compressor runs continuously — No off period means the thermostat is never satisfied.
- NEAR MISS — the freezer was recently overfilled with warm food — Give any big load a full day before diagnosing.
- NEAR MISS — the temperature dial was changed — Check the dial before anything else.
Causes, most likely first
- A stopped condenser fan — First, and by a distance. Without rear airflow the condenser cannot shed heat, and the result is continuous running with poor cooling. The REF line puts this within reach without a teardown.
- A cold ambient room confusing the thermostat — Second, and common. A mechanical thermostat in a cold garage may not call for cooling at all, and the cabinet drifts up as the room cycles.
- A frosted evaporator blocking the airflow — Then this one. A blocked coil is the classic cause and a full defrost both proves and cures it. Owners of the models listed in the table on this page describe this in almost identical words.
- Overloading and blocked air paths — Further down. Loading matters more in a freezer than owners expect; leave the return path clear.
- A dirty condenser coil — Near the bottom of the list. Dust and pet hair are the enemy here, and cleaning is free.
The diagnostic order
- Feel and inspect the condenser coil — Cool coil with a running compressor is bad; a furred coil is worse and free to fix.
- Clear the load away from the air paths — Unload the back of the cabinet and re-measure tomorrow. The REF line behaves the same way here from one model to the next.
- Look at the rear wall for frost — A glassy sheet closing the fan opening explains the whole complaint.
- Check the door seal with a sheet of paper — Even resistance all round, or the gasket is feeding warm air in continuously.
- Run a full manual defrost — A complete thaw is the definitive airflow test.
Before you open anything
Safety
Isolate before opening. Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel, and clear ice with warm cloths only — the evaporator tubing is directly behind the liner and a blade reaches it easily.

Where the owner line is
Call once the gasket, the coil, the load and a full defrost have all been addressed and the cabinet still will not hold temperature. What remains is behind the evaporator cover or in the sealed system.
