What is actually going on
Where the brand-generic article treats overloading as a footnote, the FRZ line makes it a first check: the models listed in the table on this page rely on a single return path and a cabinet packed to the back panel stalls it completely.
What you observe
- The cabinet exterior is hot at the sides — Compare with how it used to feel rather than with a number.
- The door is difficult to reopen immediately after closing — Normal: the cabinet pulls a slight vacuum. A door that swings open freely is the one to worry about. The FRZ line is no worse than its siblings here, but it is no better either.
- Ice cream is soft but cubes are still solid — Soft ice cream with hard cubes means the cabinet is a little warm, not broken.
- Water is pooling in the base of the cabinet — Water plus warmth is a thaw in progress.
- Food is refreezing with large crystals — Partial thaw and refreeze cycles produce crystals and freezer burn, and they indicate drift rather than failure.
- NEAR MISS — the cabinet is silent and nothing is cold — Silence means no attempt; start with the supply.
- NEAR MISS — the temperature dial was changed — Check the dial before anything else.
Causes, most likely first
- A cold ambient room confusing the thermostat — The one to check first. Garage installations need a cabinet rated for it; otherwise winter produces this fault every year. This is where the FRZ line differs from the brand’s other lines.
- A stopped condenser fan — Next most likely. A seized rear fan and a dirty coil produce identical symptoms and are checked together.
- A defrost heater or control failure — Then this one. The cause behind the frost: when the defrost cycle stops, the coil ices solid and the airflow fails. That holds for every model the table on this page lists.
- Overloading and blocked air paths — Fourth in the ranking. Loading matters more in a freezer than owners expect; leave the return path clear.
- A frosted evaporator blocking the airflow — Fifth. A blocked coil is the classic cause and a full defrost both proves and cures it.
Working through it in order
- Check the room temperature and the cabinet rating — Ambient temperature is a genuine cause, not an excuse.
- Clear the load away from the air paths — Nothing against the back panel, nothing over the vents, then give it a day. On the models listed in the table on this page this is the check that decides the job.
- Measure the cabinet with a thermometer — Leave it a few hours in the middle of the load. A freezer holds food safely at 0 °F (−18 °C) or below.
- Check the door seal with a sheet of paper — Even resistance all round, or the gasket is feeding warm air in continuously.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before you start. Never chip at ice with a screwdriver or a knife; warm cloths take longer and they do not puncture the liner. Dry the floor as you work, because a wet floor in front of a heavy cabinet is the real hazard in this job.

When to call a technician
Call once the gasket, the coil, the load and a full defrost have all been addressed and the cabinet still will not hold temperature. What remains is behind the evaporator cover or in the sealed system.
