Before you open anything

Unplug the machine before removing any panel, and close both taps before disturbing a hose. Never run a spin with a panel removed to listen. A large-capacity washer is very heavy - get help rather than levering it on a corner, and never tilt it with water still in the drum.

When to call a technician
Call when the feet are set, the paddles are sound and the drum still rumbles under spin, because bearings mean splitting the outer tub. Call sooner if the drum can be moved up and down by hand at the door opening, which is a bearing already well worn.
