The short answer

What you observe

- Both compartments warming at a similar rate — The condenser, the defrost system or the sealed system.

- NEAR MISS - silent and warming — Nothing is running, which is a supply or start-relay fault.
Causes, most likely first on this family
- Fresh-food door racked on its hinges — First on the larger codes in this family, and the cause most often mistaken for a worn gasket.
- Condenser starved of air at the back — Second. A tall freestanding cabinet pushed hard against a wall recirculates its own heat.
- Frost restricting airflow between compartments — Third, and the usual explanation when the door seals and the freezer is still cold.
- A compartment fan not running — Fourth, and identical at the shelf to a blocked path.
- Stalled defrost or sealed-system fault — Last, and the only pair needing instruments.
Check in this order, and why
- Close the door on a sheet of paper at the bottom corner, then the top — First, because grip at the top with release at the bottom names the leading cause immediately.
- Read both compartment temperatures — Second, because one warm or both warm routes the rest of the diagnosis.
- Pull the cabinet clear of the wall for a day — Third, and free: a condenser breathing its own warm air does this with nothing broken.
- Look at the rear wall inside for a frost sheet — Fourth, and the step that moves the diagnosis to the defrost system.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never chip ice off an evaporator with a metal tool - the tubing is soft aluminium and a puncture ends the cabinet. Empty a tall cabinet before moving it.

When to call a technician
