The short answer

- Both columns warming at a similar rate — The condenser, the defrost system or the sealed system.
- A sheet of frost in the freezer evaporator compartment — A stalled defrost cycle, with the ice now blocking the coil.
- NEAR MISS - silent and warming — Nothing is running, which is a supply or start-relay fault.
Causes, most likely first on this family
- Frost narrowing the duct between the columns — First on this platform, and the reason the complaint presents from the bottom of the fridge upwards.
- Evaporator fan not running — Second, and identical at the shelf: the freezer stays cold and the fridge does not.
- A tall fresh-food door racked and no longer sealing — Third, and specific to the shape: a long narrow door loaded with bottles takes a set and opens at the bottom.
- Condenser starved of air — Fourth, and the leading cause when both columns warm together.
- Stalled defrost or sealed-system fault — Last, and the only pair needing instruments.
Check in this order, and why
- Compare the top and the bottom of the fresh-food column — First, because warm at the bottom with a cold top points straight at the cross-duct.
- Open the freezer door and listen for the evaporator fan — Second. A silent fan with a cold freezer explains a warm fridge completely.
- Test the fresh-food door with paper at the bottom and the top — Third. Grip at the top with release at the bottom is a racked door.
- Pull the cabinet clear of the wall for a day — Fourth, and the step that matters when both columns are warming.

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never chip ice out of a duct or off an evaporator with a metal tool - the tubing is soft aluminium and a puncture ends the cabinet. A tall door loaded with bottles is heavy; empty it before adjusting hinges.

When to call a technician
