The short answer

- Ice built up around the drain opening specifically — A blocked drain refreezing its own meltwater rather than general frosting.
- Items at the back of the fridge frozen solid — The compartment setting, or air from the vent landing directly on them.

Causes, most likely first on this family
- Fresh-food compartment set too cold — First, because it is free to check, free to correct, and it produces exactly this symptom within days.
- Blocked drain refreezing meltwater — Second, and the cause that turns an ice complaint into a leak complaint if it is left.
- Door or drawer not sealing — Third, and the source of freezer-side frost specifically: every bit of humid air admitted has to freeze somewhere.
- Food stacked against the rear wall or the vent — Fourth, and genuinely common. A package resting on the cooling surface frosts and then holds the frost in place.

- Check the compartment setting and what changed recently — Second. A colder setting is the leading cause of rear-wall ice and costs nothing to correct.
- Pull the food back from the rear wall and the vent — Third. Packages resting on a cooling surface both create frost and hide it.
- Check the drain opening at the base of the rear wall — Fourth. Ice collecting there specifically means a blockage, not general frosting.

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never chip ice off a rear wall or an evaporator with a knife or a screwdriver - the tubing behind the liner is soft and a puncture ends the cabinet. Let the cabinet thaw with the doors open instead, and do not use a heat gun.

When to call a technician
Call when frost returns within weeks of a full manual defrost on a cabinet whose settings are correct and whose doors seal, because that is a defrost heater, thermostat or control fault. Call also if a drain refuses to clear with warm water, since the blockage is then beyond the part of the route you can reach.
