The short answer
A new noise from the BUFR line usually comes from the evaporator fan, the condenser fan at the base, or a cabinet that is no longer level. These freezers make a number of normal sounds too, so the first job is separating the ones that matter from the ones that always happened.
What you observe
- A rhythmic scraping or chirping from inside — On the models listed in the table on this page, a fan blade striking ice on a frost-free build. It follows the cooling cycle and frequently stops when the door is opened.
- A buzz or rattle from the base at the back — The condenser fan out of balance or catching debris, usually louder once the compressor has been running a while.
- A rattle that changes when the cabinet is pushed — An unlevel cabinet or a drip tray no longer seated, and nothing is faulty at all. The models in the table behave the same way here.
- A knock at the moment the compressor starts — Hardened mountings letting a normal start surge transmit into the cabinet, which is age rather than failure.
- Gurgling or ticking that has always been present — Refrigerant moving and plastic contracting as the cabinet cools, both entirely normal on these models.
- A hum that has grown noticeably louder — Worth attention when it is a change rather than a level, particularly if run times have also grown.

Causes, most likely first
- A fan blade striking ice — First on the BUFR line for any frost-free build, because the fan runs with little clearance to the coil and a modest frost build is enough to bring ice into the blade path. That holds across every model this page covers.
- A cabinet that is not level or not stable — Second because it is free to fix and very common after a floor is laid or the appliance is moved. A cabinet rocking on three feet transmits every vibration into the room. That is true of every model this family spans.
- Debris or imbalance at the condenser fan — The base fan pulls in dust, paper and pet hair, and a blade with debris on one side runs out of balance and buzzes under the cabinet.
- A loose drip tray or rear panel — Components that only rest in place buzz at particular compressor speeds, which makes the noise intermittent and hard to place by ear.
- A failing compressor — Last on this platform because it is rare and because everything above it imitates it. A compressor genuinely failing is usually also cooling badly, so noise alone is weak evidence.
Check in this order, and why
- Open the door and listen for the noise to change — First on the BUFR line because a fan that cuts with the door names itself, and because the test costs nothing. It is the same on all the models in the table on this page.
- Put an ear to the base at the back — Second: the condenser fan and the compressor both live there and they sound entirely different, one a buzz and the other a hum.
- Rock the cabinet gently with both hands — Third, because a cabinet that moves is a cabinet that rattles, and levelling it takes a spanner and two minutes. This applies to the whole line rather than to one model.

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Do not reach behind a rear liner panel while the cabinet is powered, because a fan can restart without warning.

When to call a technician
Call when the door test, the levelling, the base fan and the loose panels are all clear and the noise persists. On the BUFR line that points at a fan bearing or the compressor, both of which are behind panels. The same is true of each model covered here.
