The answer first
Poor drying on the HPD line has a distinctive order of causes: lint filter, condenser stack, overloading, then the heating circuit last. Everything above the heater costs nothing to check and explains the symptom completely, which is why the heater is the last suspect rather than the first.
What this looks like
- The cycle runs much longer than it used to — Across the whole of this line, sensor programmes extend until the load reads dry, so a restriction stretches every cycle before it ever fails one.
- The drum feels barely warm at the end — Distinguishes a heating fault from an airflow one: a restricted machine usually feels hot inside, not cold.
- The cabinet and the room get unusually warm — Heat that cannot leave with the airflow stays in the machine and the room, which is the signature of a restriction. This applies to the whole line rather than to one model.
- The lint filter is coated after every load — Normal in itself, but a filter that clogs within one cycle means fabric is shedding heavily and the secondary filters need attention too.
- NEAR MISS: the machine stops part-way with an error indication — That is a cycle fault and the cycle-fault page for this family covers it, although a restriction frequently causes both.
Most likely causes first
- A blocked or coated lint filter — First on the HPD line because every cubic foot of drying air passes through it. A filter that looks clear can still be sealed by a transparent film of fabric softener, which is the version owners never find. Every model in this family behaves this way.
- A clogged condenser stack or secondary filter — Second because it is the part of the air path owners do not know exists. Lint that passes the door filter accumulates here and progressively strangles the flow. The models in the table behave the same way here.
- Loading fabrics that cannot shed water — Heavy towels and bedding straight from a low spin carry far more water than a cycle is designed to remove, which looks like a machine fault and is a laundry one.
- A condenser stack that has never been cleaned — The part of the air path owners do not know exists. Lint accumulates in it for years and progressively strangles the flow while the filter looks clean every time.
- A failed heating element or thermostat — Last on this platform because a genuinely cold drum is rare and because every cause above it produces a damp load far more often. The distinguishing observation is a drum that is cold rather than hot at the end.
Where to start, and why
- Clean the lint filter and wash it under a tap — First on the HPD line because a film of softener seals a filter that looks perfectly clear, and only running water reveals it. That holds across every model this page covers.
- Open the lower panel and pull the condenser stack — Second because it is the hidden half of the air path, and on these models it is designed to be withdrawn and rinsed by the owner.
- Check the secondary filter or sponge behind the condenser — Third: it catches what the door filter missed and it is the part most often left uncleaned for the life of the machine. It is the same on all the models in the table on this page.
- Feel the drum at the end of a cycle — Hot and wet is a moisture-removal fault; cold and wet is a heating fault. This single observation splits the remaining causes.

Safety
Switch off at the breaker first, and stop immediately if you smell scorching at any point. A burning smell from a dryer is not a fault to reproduce for diagnosis, and the machine should stay off until it has been looked at.

When to stop and call
Stop and call if the machine trips its breaker, if the cabinet becomes too hot to touch, or if there is any burning smell. Those three are the cases where running one more cycle is genuinely unwise. It does not vary across the models listed on this page.
