The short answer
A dishwasher that will not drain is telling you the water has nowhere to go. On the DDT line the two ends of that path — the filter at the bottom of the tub and the connection at the sink — are both owner-accessible, and between them they explain most standing-water complaints. Listen for the pump before assuming it has failed. The name covers a long run of model numbers, so treat the ranking below as the pattern for the platform and the table as the authority on which machine you actually have.
What you observe on these models
- Drain works after the filter is cleaned, then fails again in a week — The filter is catching what a partly blocked sump is failing to pass; cleaning treats the symptom each time.
- Cycle stops early and the panel will not clear — Many machines abandon the cycle when the water has not gone, so a drain fault presents as a stalled cycle rather than as standing water.
- Water standing in the sump at the end of every cycle — An inch or so left over the filter, usually cloudy, with dishes that came out mostly clean.
- The machine hums but the water level does not move — The pump is being commanded and is drawing current, so the fault is mechanical rather than electrical.
- NEAR MISS — the tub is empty but dishes are wet — That is a drying complaint, not a drainage one, and it belongs on a different page.
Causes, most likely first on the DDT line
- Kinked, looped or blocked drain hose — Most likely here. Grease sets inside a drain hose over years and narrows it from the inside, which produces a drain that works slowly and then not at all.
- Blocked filter and sump screen — Second on this family. The filter is the one part of the drain path designed to catch things, so it is the first thing to fill; on a machine used daily it can choke in weeks rather than years.
- Drain pump impeller jammed — Third, and less common. A jammed impeller gives the classic signature — the machine hums for the full drain period and the water level never falls.
Check in this order, and why
- Follow the drain hose from the machine to the waste — Look for a kink behind the cabinet, check it still rises to a high loop, and squeeze along its length for the hard spot that grease leaves.
- Take the filter out and look at the sump under it — Twist it free, rinse it, and put a hand into the well beneath — most of what blocks a drain is sitting there and comes out with a finger.
- Reach the impeller through the sump opening — With the power off, turn the impeller by hand. It should spin freely. A hard stop is an object, and the object is usually visible once the light is right.

Kill the power at the breaker first: a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Treat standing water as if it holds glass, scoop it out rather than feeling through it, and leave the door interlock alone — it is what keeps scalding water inside the cabinet.

When to call a technician
If the filter is clean, the impeller turns freely and the hose is clear, the next step is electrical testing of the pump and its circuit, and that is a service call on the DDT line. Call straight away if water is backing up into the sink as well as standing in the machine — that is a house drain problem and it will not be cured by anything done to the appliance.
