The short version
When the BDF line will not begin a cycle, separate three states first: nothing lights at all, the panel lights but nothing happens, or the cycle starts and immediately stops. Each points at a different part of the chain, and on this platform the middle case is the most common and the cheapest to resolve.
What you will notice
- The door will not stay shut — For the models in the table on this page, it closes and springs back a few millimetres, so the latch never engages and the machine never sees a closed door.
- The cycle starts and stops within a minute — A brief start that aborts is a fill or drain precondition rather than a start fault, and it points at the water side.
- The machine beeps when the start button is pressed but does nothing — An acknowledged press with no action is the control refusing the cycle, which is a lock or precondition state and not a failed button. That holds across every model this page covers.
- A delay indicator is lit — The programme has been accepted and deferred, so the machine is behaving correctly and will start later than expected.
- NEAR MISS: the machine runs but leaves water in the tub — That is a drainage fault and belongs on the drainage page for this family.
What is usually behind it
- The door is closed but not latched — First on the BDF line by a wide margin. A protruding handle, a tall item in the upper rack or a slightly sagging door stops the latch engaging, and the panel still lights because the display is upstream of the latch switch. It does not vary across the models listed on this page.
- No supply at the socket or a tripped breaker — Second because it is free to check and because a dishwasher shares its circuit with other kitchen loads often enough for an unrelated appliance to have tripped it. It is the same on all the models in the table on this page.
- A service tap closed during unrelated work — The machine checks for fill before committing to a programme, so a closed tap produces a total and completely silent refusal with no error an owner can read.
- A latch switch that has become marginal — Between working and failed there is a stage where the switch makes contact only when the door is pressed, which produces an intermittent no-start that owners find maddening.
- A failed supply component inside the door panel — Last because it cannot be confirmed without stripping the door and because everything upstream of it is free to check. It is suspected only when the socket is proven and the panel stays dark.
How to narrow it down
- Press the door firmly shut and listen for the latch — First because it is the most common cause on the BDF line and because the latch makes an audible click when it engages that a nearly-closed door does not. The same is true of each model covered here.
- Look for a protruding item in either rack — A handle through the upper basket or a tall board in the lower one holds the door a few millimetres proud, which is enough to stop the latch and invisible from the front.
- Check the socket with something else — Third, because it separates the appliance from the circuit in seconds and because a shared kitchen circuit is tripped by other loads more often than by the dishwasher. Every model in this family behaves this way.
Working safely
Safety
Isolate the machine at the breaker before any panel is removed; stored charge can remain after the supply is cut. Do not operate the latch mechanism with a tool while the appliance is powered, and never wedge, prop or hold the door closed to make a cycle run.

When to book a visit
The line here is the door panel: everything in front of it is an owner check and everything inside it is service work. Call immediately if the appliance trips the household circuit, because that is an electrical fault rather than a start fault. The models in the table behave the same way here.
