The short answer
When a refrigerator flashes, beeps or runs its compartments at the wrong temperature, the control is normally acting on bad information. Finding which input is wrong is the whole job, and some of it can be done from the front. On a Bangson refrigerator the order below is what makes this page worth reading — the causes are ranked for this kind of machine, not listed alphabetically.
What you observe
- A code or a flashing indicator on the display — Note which compartment it refers to. Most codes name a sensor and a location.
- One compartment is at the wrong temperature while the other is fine — That points at a damper, a sensor or a fan for that compartment rather than the whole system.
- The display works but settings do not take effect — A control accepting input and not acting on it, which is either the board or a mode it is locked into.
- The interior light stays on with the door shut — A door switch fault, and it also confuses the control about how often the door is opened.
- NEAR MISS — the cabinet is warm and nothing runs at all — That is a no-start rather than a control fault, and it starts with the supply.
What it usually turns out to be
- Temperature sensor out of range — First. Thermistors drift and fail, and a sensor reading a compartment as colder than it is stops the control cooling it — which produces a warm compartment with a machine that looks like it is behaving perfectly.
- Door switch failure — Second, and it is under-appreciated: the switch tells the control when the door is open, and a failed one leaves the light on, the fan off and the defrost logic confused.
- Damper or diffuser not moving — Third. On a single-evaporator unit the damper meters cold air into the fresh-food compartment; when it sticks, one side runs warm while the other runs cold and no sensor is at fault.
- Control board failure — Last. Genuine board faults on a refrigerator usually follow a surge or condensation, and they take more than one function down at once.
What to check first, second, third
- Compare the two compartments with a separate thermometer — An independent reading tells you whether the display is lying, which decides everything that follows.
- Check the interior light behaviour — Press the door switch by hand. A light that stays on with the door shut is a finding in itself.
- Power the unit down for a few minutes and restore it — That clears a latched control state and tells you whether the fault is live or stuck.
The checks worth doing
- Put an independent thermometer in each compartment — Leave it several hours between readings. Displayed temperature and actual temperature are frequently different.
Tools: appliance thermometerAbout 20 min
- Record the code and the behaviour before resetting — Photograph the panel. Clearing it without noting it wastes the occurrence.
About 5 min
- Press and release the door switch by hand — Watch the light and listen for the evaporator fan starting and stopping. It is an easy, informative test.
About 10 min
- Check the air vents inside are not blocked by food — Packing food against the vents mimics a damper fault exactly, and it costs nothing to rule out.
About 15 min
- Clean the condenser coil — A choked coil changes every temperature in the cabinet and makes a control look faulty.
Tools: vacuum, soft brushAbout 30 min
- STOP before testing sensors or the board — Those need a meter and the resistance tables for the family.
Power, water and the limits of owner work
Safety
Power off first, always at the breaker if the plug is behind the cabinet where you cannot see it come out. Treat the compressor and its start pack as live until proven otherwise. Sealed-system tubing is not an owner repair at any level, and a fridge that is being tipped or walked needs a second person because the weight sits high and moves suddenly.
When to call a technician
Book a visit when the independent thermometer disagrees with the display, or when a code returns after a full power-down with the vents clear and the coil clean. At that point a sensor, a damper or the board is at fault, and separating them means resistance readings against the family tables. Take the independent temperature readings with you into the call — they are the single most useful thing you can hand over.

Scope of this page
Treat this as the generalized Bangson refrigerator page. It is written to be true across the platform, which means it stops short of the details that only hold for one family — connector pinouts, specific board revisions, the order the cabinet comes apart in. Those live on the family- and model-level pages linked here, and where one exists for your unit, that page outranks this one.
