Recognising it
- Loads need a second or third cycle to finish — The machine is working and the water is not going anywhere. That is airflow, not heat.
- Items are hot but still damp at the end — Heat with no moisture removal — the clearest possible restriction signature.
- Thick items stay wet while thin ones are bone dry — Overloading, or a load too mixed for the sensor to judge.
- The room gets humid while the machine runs — Moist air is escaping into the room rather than going down the duct — a disconnected or split vent.
- NEAR MISS — nothing is warm at all — No heat at all is a heating fault, and the diagnosis starts in a different place.
What it usually turns out to be
- Restricted or leaking vent duct — First, and it covers most complaints in this class. A duct that is half-blocked still lets the machine heat, so the owner sees a drying problem rather than a heating one, and the machine quietly gets hotter while doing less work.
- Overloading — Second. A packed drum stops clothes tumbling through the airstream, so the outside of the load dries and the middle does not. Compact drums reach that point with a load that looks reasonable.
- Moisture sensor coated with residue — Third. Fabric-softener film on the sensor bars makes the machine read the load as dry early, which ends the cycle before the clothes are done.
- Lint screen fitted wrong or damaged — Fourth, and easy to overlook: a torn screen lets lint into the duct, and a screen not seated lets it bypass entirely, both of which accelerate the first cause.
Check in this order, and why
- Feel the exhaust outside while a cycle runs — Strong warm flow means the path is good and the problem is the load or the sensor. Weak flow makes the duct the answer.
- Dry a small, uniform load and compare — A half load of similar items removes both the overloading and the mixed-load variables in one test.
- Wipe the sensor bars inside the drum — They are usually two metal strips near the lint opening. Cleaning them costs a minute and fixes a real share of early-stopping cycles.

- Clean the lint screen every load and the housing monthly — The screen is the first restriction and the housing behind it is the second. Vacuum the slot rather than just the mesh.

Safety
Switch the circuit off and unplug where you can reach the plug. This appliance combines heat, a large motor and flammable lint, which is why the safety step here is physical as well as electrical: clear the vent path, check the outdoor flap opens, and never restart a machine that smells scorched.
When to call a technician
Call if drying performance is still poor after the duct is clear end to end, the sensor bars are clean and loads are sorted by weight. At that point a technician will look at the thermostats and the airflow through the machine itself rather than through the duct, which needs the cabinet open. Say how the clothes come out — hot and damp points at airflow, cool and damp points at heat, and the two send a technician to different components.
