The short answer
Most washer complaints fall into a handful of classes, and two of them — a machine that will not start and a machine that will not drain — account for far more calls than everything else combined. This page names each class, says how to recognise it, and sends you to the page that covers it. Everything below is written for Avanti washers as a class, and each entry links down to the page that carries the diagnosis.
Each fault, and the page that covers it
- It will not start — the panel lights but nothing happens — The door lock has not confirmed, or the cycle was never committed. Covered on the no-start page for this machine.
- Water is left in the drum at the end — A drainage fault, and the pump filter is the first place to look. See the drainage page.
- It leaks onto the floor — Where the water appears decides the cause: front is the door seal or the drawer, back is the hoses. See the leak page.
- It is noisy, especially during the spin — Balance and levelling first, bearings last. See the noise page.
- Clothes come out dingy or still soiled — Usually loading and dosing rather than hardware. See the cleaning-performance page.
- It smells musty — Biofilm in the seal, drawer and sump. See the odour page.
- It trips the breaker or smells hot — Stop using it. That is the electrical-safety page and it is the one class with no owner repair.
Causes, most likely first
- Drainage and no-start complaints — These two dominate the category. Both have a high owner-fix rate — a pump filter for the first, a door lock or a cleared control for the second — which is why they are also the two worth attempting before booking anything.
- Leaks — Next in frequency and the most damaging when ignored, because the water reaches the floor covering and the cabinet base long before it reaches the point of being obvious.
- Noise and vibration — Common but mostly benign: levelling and load balance explain the majority, and the expensive cause — the drum bearing — announces itself with a distinctive spin-speed-dependent roar.
- Wash results and odour — Frequently reported, rarely hardware. Both are usually dosing, loading and temperature habits, and both respond to maintenance rather than to parts.
- Electrical faults — Least common and most serious. A trip or a tingle takes the machine out of service immediately, and nothing in this class is an owner repair.
The fault map
General guidance| Problem class | Where to look first | Usually an owner fix? |
|---|---|---|
| Will not start | Door lock click, then the supply | Often |
| Will not drain | Pump filter, then the drain hose | Often |
| Leaking | Locate front versus back first | Sometimes |
| Noisy in spin | Levelling, then load balance | Often |
| Poor wash results | Load size and detergent dose | Usually |
| Musty smell | Seal fold, drawer, filter | Usually |
| Trips the breaker | Stop using it and isolate | No |

Safety
Turn the circuit off and confirm it, then close the supply valve. Anything you drain will come out faster than expected, so have a shallow tray ready. If water has reached the control board or the motor, stop there and call: a dried-out board can work for a week and fail closed afterwards.
The line between a fix and a call
Owner work on a washer ends at the cabinet. Within that boundary there is a lot you can do, and most drainage, balance, odour and wash-quality complaints resolve there. Book a visit for anything that needs a meter, anything behind a panel, and anything electrical at all. A compact machine is also worth a repair-or-replace conversation before a major part is ordered, because drum and bearing work often approaches the value of the appliance.

Scope of this page
Treat this as the generalized Avanti washer page. It is written to be true across the platform, which means it stops short of the details that only hold for one family — connector pinouts, specific board revisions, the order the cabinet comes apart in. Those live on the family- and model-level pages linked here, and where one exists for your unit, that page outranks this one.
