What this usually is
Refrigerator faults are unusual among appliances because the clock is running: a fault that would be an inconvenience elsewhere is a food-safety problem here. The most common classes are cooling loss, frost buildup and water leaks, and they are ranked below in the order they actually arrive. What goes wrong, and where it is covered
- It runs constantly but the cabinet is not cold — Usually a frosted evaporator or a failed fan rather than a dead compressor. See the cooling page.
- It is silent and nothing is cold — A supply or start-circuit fault. See the no-start page.
- Heavy frost on the back wall of the freezer — A defrost-system fault, which then blocks the airflow that cools the fresh-food side.
- Water inside the cabinet or on the floor — A blocked defrost drain, usually — the water has nowhere to go and backs up.

- It is noisy — Fans and the compressor produce most of it; a new noise is worth identifying rather than ignoring.

- Cooling loss from airflow and defrost faults — The largest class. A frosted evaporator or a stopped fan stops cold air moving, and the cabinet warms while the unit runs — which is why so many owners describe a fridge that is working and not cooling.
- Condenser and ventilation neglect — Second, and the most preventable: a coil packed with dust makes the compressor run hot and long, and it eventually produces thermal cut-outs that look like a failing compressor.
- Sensor and control faults — Third. Thermistors drift, door switches fail, and the control acts faithfully on bad information — which is why an independent thermometer is the most useful diagnostic an owner owns.
- Water and drain faults — Fourth: a blocked defrost drain puts water in the salad drawer and under the cabinet, and it is one of the few refrigerator faults with a genuine owner fix.
- Sealed-system and compressor failure — Least common and the one that usually ends the appliance, because refrigerant work is licensed and the cost rarely justifies it on a domestic unit.

Power off first, always at the breaker if the plug is behind the cabinet where you cannot see it come out. Treat the compressor and its start pack as live until proven otherwise. Sealed-system tubing is not an owner repair at any level, and a fridge that is being tipped or walked needs a second person because the weight sits high and moves suddenly.
When to book a visit
Call promptly rather than waiting, because a refrigerator fault has a cost attached to every hour. When you book, say whether the unit is running or silent and whether the freezer side is still cold: those two facts narrow the diagnosis more than anything else you can offer. If a technician finds a sealed-system fault, expect a frank repair-or-replace conversation rather than a quote.
