- Failed diode or capacitor in the high-voltage section — Third, and this is the one that trips breakers. It is behind the case and it is not an owner fault to find.
- Supply cord or outlet damage — Fourth: microwaves draw heavily and are often plugged into extension leads on a crowded counter, which is exactly where connections overheat.

- Inspect the wave guide cover — It is the thin panel on the side wall. Scorching, pitting or a hole means the oven should not be used.
- Check what was in the oven when it sparked — Metal trim on crockery is a surprisingly common answer and it does not always look metallic.
